I enjoyed reading this complicated book so much that I have decided to keep the book in my personal library. This story had so many characters and incidents that contributed to the result of death for this British girl. So many coverups and exposures that at the time were occurring everywhere in the world. It really opened my eyes and mind to the worldwide happenings.

Interesting book--it provided a flavor of the local and expatriate communities of pre-communist China, the looming sense of Japan closing in, and the interest of a murder mystery.

Gives interesting information about an event in time. I was not very familiar with Japanese, British and Chinese relations prior to WWI. The book is halting in only average writing.

Pretty good writing - the author sets the scene well, although given the times it might be similar to the sublime meeting the ridiculous.

This was an informative account of a mysterious murder in Peking on the brink of the Japanese occupation.
