Joy Hakim is the sole author of this series, and she knows how to tell a story. This is one of the advantages of her American history series over textbooks written by committee. The children read them more as entertainment than as "required reading." Hakim knows how to talk to middle school students. The book is also suitable for advanced readers among elementary-aged children.
