This is an outstanding book for both its story and its illustrations. After reading true slave accounts the author wrote this story about a boy and his grandma, both slaves, helping other slaves to freedom. Full of emotion, truth, and daring, the story immediately grabs the reader. Written simply enough for younger ones to follow willingly and deep enough for older ones to enjoy. The action takes place mostly at night and the illustrations are luminous with night and meaning. Excellent book for family and group reading.
