I don't know how to express my feelings for this book but I'll try. The writing is gorgeous. There are 2 main characters. I loved one of them and really disliked the other, even though I did empathize with her. I was riveted. It's not a happy story and I finished it feeling a bit bereft. That may sound dramatic; but if you have ever lived through adolescence, college, depression, any or all of those ..,.and if you have ever felt like you don't belong you might have the same sort of reaction. I recommend this but with a caveat. Beware, it's harsh and difficult to digest.

I'm not sure why PBS has this listed as a psychological thriller, because it is not that. It is a beautifully written but very dark coming of age story about two people who have to find themselves individually before they work together.

The early chapters have the feel of a YA novel, but it is quite explicit at time and more suitable for adults.

Sally Rooney is a writer to watch.

Dublin. Marianne and Connell attend Trinity College and in a relationship. They are 2 complex characters and I could not invest myself in them but was interested to see what happens to them. In the end, they both knew they cared about each other but canât seem to get their act together. I felt let down. I enjoyed Rooneyâs writing and look forward to Conversations With Friends and would recommend this book to those who like coming of age stories.
