More like a medieval suspense than a mystery, and a very gentle one at that. it might not be far off the mark to call it romantic suspense, although the closest we get to physical contact is when our two protagonists ride double on a horse. The dialogue in the beginning chapter feels more than a little forced, as the author recaps the last book. It smooths out later I really enjoyed the depictions of daily life and how things were made, and I particularly liked the information about the nunnery. I knew that more than a few women were forced into the life, but the legal cases for a few women who got out were fascinating. The POV easily switches between Nicholas' first-person and Emma's third-person. Nice easy read, but a long way from action-packed. I'm going to surmise that its main function is to get Emma and Nicholas into closer proximity. I enjoyed it and I'll be looking for the next.
