This (IMHO) was the last book in the series that the TRUE Anita character was really displayed. She still shows her own will to overcome, think or otherwise blast out of any situation. Hamilton allows you to into the lives of other characters here also. The books after this are all basically paranormal romances with freaky sex scenes. (Not saying that's a totally BAD thing.....but true story lines make the scenes less "chica-powpow".)Every book after this seems like Anita gets hit with a date-rape drug and just succumbs. (nothing sexy about that)

We finally get to learn more about Edward - assasin for hire...man...monster? And how much like him has Anita become? In this book they battle together, not against vamps or wolves, but against a different kind of monster all together.

This book is very different from the previous Anita Blake series. In this one, the reader gets to know more about Edward the Bounty Hunter. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. He certainly is not as mysterious as he once was. This book is not for the faint of heart. There are many bloody scenes and some involve children. Overall, it was a very good book.

Edward is the main focus of this book. Very interesting. It was both compelling and disheartening. I enjoyed the glimpse behind the curtain of Edward, but it is also kinda sucky to find a semi-normal man. All in all very worth it.

Every Anita Blake novel takes the reader right to the very edge of reality. This new chapter gives great insight into the other life of "Ted" otherwise known as Edward. If only Jean Claude and Richard had put in more appearances this would be this reader's favorite.

This adventure of Anita Baker's introduces another dimension of her "monsters" .... Aztec "gods." If you know anything about the gods of the Pre-Columbian cultures of Mexico, this will be even more interesting.

This is one of my favorites in the series, It's great! suspenseful, full of action and yes~ a book with lots of action can have a good plot! Before I started reading the Anita Blake series, I didn't think it could be that way =)

you have to read this series to really 'get it' I think~ the descriptions all sound kinda lame! haha. but it's a great series, way better than the lousy descriptions they print on the books themselves. Anita Blake is a very well written character. If you haven't read the other books, don't start here!! you won't fully get or appreciate the whole background and such. (kinda like the reviewer who said they didn't 'buy the hero' there is a reason she can get so hurt and be okay! it's all in earlier books.)

Ninth in the Anita Blake vampire killer series. Full introduction of a side character really makes this one interesting. Witty, steamy and action packed.

Another great addition to the series. I was pleased to see Edward back in the story and enjoyed that his character had become more in depth. This is definitely a series for people who like this genre and not for those looking for something boring and ordinary. The main characters have depth and I like the fact that Hamilton takes time to describe their thoughts, actions and emotions instead of just being vague. Anita is a thoroughly thought out person who has so many of the same emotions and problems that it's easy to see her as "real" and relate to the things she has to go through. A wonderful story!

On a plot hole note...
Does anyone who read these ever wonder why the vampires are considered citizens where it can be murder for killing them, but the lycanthropes don't seem to fall under this protective law? The books say that they have a disease, like AIDS, and shouldn't be discriminated against yet are still considered "varmits" (in some states ;P) and can be shot on sight as long as blood tests prove they're a lycanthrope. The werewolves even have a power system where killing the leader is okay (and has to be known by the authorities) to become pack leader, yet that's okay. As is a lot of killing of other lycanthropes. I mean really, where's the ACLU (or would that be LCLU?) when you need them?

This was my first Hamilton book and I just wasn't impressed. I just found Anita hard to believe. She was always getting hurt and always miraculously surviving. I liked the storyline, I just didn't believe in the hero.

This is a return to Anita's tough side, as she heads off to New Mexico to help Edward. This book focuses almost entirely on Edward, and is a little grittier than what fans of most of the later Anita books have become accustomed to. A good solid story and important to the series, but probably one of my lesser favored ones.

Much much deeper development of Edward as a character and his friendship with Anita. Finally someone she doesn't need to sleep with to keep in her life. An insane friendship with as many threats as olive branches but very Anita Blake. In terms of the series, it's an important book because she develops some new powers, advances her friendship with Edward (Ted Forrester) and we establish a creepy character whom we see again in one or two future books. It's certainly key to the series.

That said, I'm rereading entire series right now. When I reached this book I decided it wasn't worth a re-read. Story doesn't really advance her romantic relationships and while I like Edward, I don't need to read about what happens with the future step-children again. I also found her dynamic with the cops really annoying. I sure hope real cops aren't as misogynistic as the the characters in this book.

Well as a true fan of Laurell K Hamilton, this book is great I thought. Anita, vampire hunter and vampire human servant takes a break from her job and life for 6 months, then helps out her assassin friend Edward and has quite a few surprises and monsters to deal with out in New Mexico... The usual characters for Anita are not there, and this is an outstepping to the St. Louis life. But still a good read.

I had really missed the character Edward, so I'm glad Hamilton gave him a starring role in this book. This book really gives Edward a lot more depth. However, the book was a lot longer than the others in the series and really dragged. If you're not into erotica, you probably won't enjoy this book.

Not my favorite of the series. The mystery was good. We got to know Edward a lot better. However it is missing the love triangle that I love and miss so much! Anita Blake, the tough, sexy vampire executioner, zombie animator, and police consultant for preternatural crimes in St. Louis, hunts monsters in New Mexico in the ninth book of Laurell K. Hamilton's excellent series. Edward, Anita's mentor in slaying, asks Anita to return the favor that she has owed him since she killed a backup he brought in to protect her. He needs Anita's preternatural expertise as well as her firepower. Something is skinning and mutilating a few of its chosen victims, and dismembering others. Edward has no idea what creature could be responsible for such heinous crimes.
Summoning Anita has its downside for Edward, since it means letting her onto his turf. Anita is surprised to find that this normally aggressive man has a personal life, and shocked by his ability to be entirely different from the stone cold killer she's known. She also has problems with the cop in charge in Albuquerque, who believes her powers must be evil, and with the other backups Edward has brought in. Most of all, she has to deal with her own vulnerability--she's tried to shut down her ties to her vampire and werewolf lovers and go it alone, but it turns out to be harder than she thought.

On back cover: New York Times bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton offers a sexy, suspensful novel of human-and inhuman-passions, narrated by the vampire hunter known as Anita Blake... "MY NAME IS ANITA BLAKE. I'D LIKE YOU TO MEET EDWARD... Edward was a hit man. He specialized in monsters. Vampires, shape-shifters, anything and everything. There were people like me who did it legal, but Edward didn't sweat the legalities, or hell, the ethics. He was an equal oppurtunity killer. I may be one of the few friends that Edward has, but it's like being friends with a tame leopard. It may curl on the foot of your bed and let you pet it's head, but it can still eat your throat out...
