Bright Birdsong at the age of seventy years is bored. Then a tragic accident occurs that ignites racial tensions, her estranged daughter visits, then her son,the governor, is involved in a scandal involving a local cocktail waitress. Suddenly, she has a once in a lifetime opportunity to right old wrongs and to reconcile who she has become with who she wants to be.
