This is a short story about a girl, Emily, who receives a gift on her 14th birthday. It is the badges and photographs of her grandfather, great-grandfather, gg-grandfather and ggg-grandfather (4 generations), who were all sheriffs and a US Marshall. She becomes very excited and curious when her grandfather explains that her ggg-grandfather was the first sheriff of their town but no one knows where he came from. Emily and her grandfather become "detectives" to solve the mystery. It is an excellent book to introduce the concept of tracing your family tree to a young person. Most genealogy "how-to" books are overwhelming and confusing to beginners, even adults, but this book keeps it simple. It captures the curiousity, excitement and desire to solve the mystery that most people who catch the genealogy bug feel.
