If you thought the first book of this threesome was great (PIECES OF SKY), hold onto your spurs because this one is just as good -- or better. For those readers concerned with the level of violence in the first book, this one is significantly less wild. However, theres high drama marching across its pages.

Molly, younger sister to Nellie, has spirited away Nellies 2 children because her sister begged her to do so. She implies that all is not right with her second husband and she fears for their safety.

Mollie and the children are on a train in the New Mexico Territory. Suddenly, theres an accident. Before long, they learn that the man who kept looking at them was one of the seriously injured. Molly hears that the train company is paying $300 for each of the dead. She is told repeatedly that the man, Hank Wilkins, will die soon.

Molly is about out of money and she knows that her dangerous brother-in-law is having someone follow them. Molly takes a chance and marries the gravely ill man.

Molly is a trained professional healer; her famous father took her with him on hospital and home visits, plus they both volunteered at Andersonville Prison.

The doctor in El Paso (where the train arrived to care for the seriously injured), is one of the emotionally walking-wounded from the Civil War. He has given up and swears all the injured will die, no matter what he does. He wants to amputate Hanks arm; Molly objects and asks him to set the arm instead. The doctor abandons his position and Molly is left with Hank.

Hanks brother, Brady, arrives and threatens Molly. She enlists him to help her with setting Hanks arm. Brady insists that Molly accompany the family back to their ranch and tend to Hank. Also, his a wife, Jessica, is pregnant. She has had trouble with each of her pregnancies and Brady realizes that having Molly at the ranch might save both his brother and his wife.

Hank doesnt die but wakes with few memories of his past. Brady convinces Molly not to tell of the dicey nature of the wedding to Hank. As Hank starts to remember, he is troubled that he does not have any memory of marrying or having 2 step-children. When Hank finds out that there are no memories of Molly because they were not married while he was cognizant, all hell breaks loose.

This is another book I couldnt put down and it is an emotionally satisfying tale. Enjoy!

A wonderfully written continuation of the Blood Rose Trilogy and the Wilkins' family (gosh, I love those Wilkins brothers!). Molly and Hank--wow, what a great couple! They are the epitome of "still waters run deep." Open Country is a deeply engrossing tale--I was hooked by the first page--with characters that come alive in the imagination. I couldn't see how Kaki Warner could top Brady and Jessica in the first book, Pieces of Sky, but Hank and Molly are right up there with them. I'm a sucker for the strong, big, quiet type of hero; put him in the early American West, and for me that's a combination that can't be beat. Terrific story and absolutely worth 4 stars!

I loved this book, the story flows very well, and the people are multi-dimensional & fun. I enjoyed the fact that Molly & Hank fell in love over the course of the book; I was hooked as I followed their love story unfolding.

After the death of her sister, Molly McFarlane took her young niece and nephew and fled Georgia. With her brother-in-law searching for them, Molly and the children board a train heading west. A deadly train accident leaves them stranded in El Paso with no money. Molly learns that the railroad will pay a widow's fee to the wife of any man who was killed in the accident. When Molly learns that Hank Wilkins is not expected to survive from his injuries, Molly passes herself off as his wife, hoping to claim the money. But being a nurse, she can't just sit there and let him die. Molly works night and day to save Hank's life. But what will she tell him if he survives?

The second book in Kaki Warner's Blood Rose Trilogy is even better than the first. Hank is the quiet brother who doesn't have much to say. When he wakes up, he doesn't remember the accident and is worried because he also doesn't remember Molly or their wedding. But when he takes Molly and the children back to the Wilkins ranch to live with him and his family, he decides to make new memories of their life together.

Molly and Hank were perfect together. The author gave us two well drawn characters and made us believe that they were falling in love. I highly recommend this series. My rating: 5 Stars.

This 2nd book in the Blood Rose Trilogy was so much better than the first (Pieces of Sky). You will find yourself wishing for Hank amd Molly to stay together! Great read. Looking forward to the last book in the series.

Wonderful new author and book find. Once I got started I could not put this book down, staying up to the wee hours this morning to finish. Can't wait to read others in this trilogy!

I really enjoyed this book as the 2nd in an excellent series. Hank and Molly were realistic main characters and I loved getting to know them and what made them tick. Not just a romance but a couple of suspenseful situations which don't resolve until final pages. There were also some delightfully funny parts and lines which are not often easy to keep realistic but these had me laughing outloud! It was wonderful to have the brother Grady and his wife Jessica from the first story be an integral part of the second. I love historical fiction and this is one of my favorite series so might have to keep these books for a reread once again. Looking forward to the love story of the missing little brother in the 3rd book who was MIA throughout this one! Ms. Warner is a gret author, a new favorite I have found.
