A wonderful bittersweet coming of age book of two best friends set in a small English village in the 50's. This is the story of April Harlency's and Ruby's coming of age in a charming village which sharply contrasts with the gossip, prejudice and the vagaries of child abuse. Shena Mackay is an excellent writer who handles these topics gently and eloquently. I loved the book.
