D.I. Don Packard is generally considered a loner, nut job. Family man and upwardly mobile D.C. Frank Mitchell is so excited to be in the CID that he sets about training himself to deal with Don/Sir's (according to mood) peculiarities rather than complaining about them. The result is a partnership that really is one rather than the usual experienced old hand showing up the green newcomer. It takes both Packam and Mitchell to solve this crime involving a darts team and we are treated to Coward's clever writing all along the way. (Ex: "Is this one with you?" he asked [Frank], nodding at Don, who was staring into space doing his celebrated impression of a disused warehouse.)
