Being a fan of Greek mythology, I was anxious to read this anthology for several years. I'm afraid to say I was disappointed. I don't usually like short stories and this collection was not to my liking at all despite my expectations to the contrary. The only story I can sincerely say I liked was Elizabeth Vaughan's contribution because it was one of the best written and most engaging to read. But really, none of the stories put me in mind of a modern Pandora's box retelling. Pandora opened a box of trouble and woe on the world but she also let loose hope. A story that is inspired by Pandora's box, to me, suggests a dangerous situation that has a silver lining if viewed from the right perspective. I found that many of the stories didn't strike the right balance between danger and hope, and if they did have that element I thought they weren't very interesting stories or that well written. Ultimately this collection is very forgettable.

I picked this book because it featured a short story from one of my favorite authors, Anton Strout.

Taking the myth of Pandora's Box, the editors asked for contribution of stories on what Pandora's closet might have contained. The items include a pair of ruby red shoes that now belong to a middle-aged Dorothy, a red hoodie purchased by a girl on her way to visit her grandmother, and cap that belonged to a Nazi communications specialist. Some of the authors used characters from their novels and that could be a little awkward if you weren't already familiar with them. My favorite was a story about a gift of earrings to a young widow from her grandmother, herself a widow three times over. The good thing about reading an anthology is that if the story is lame, it's over quickly enough and you can continue on to something better.
