Based on a true story of George Mallory and his quest of being the first man to climb Mt. Everest. After reading the proloque you know what the end fate of Mallory will be, but as you read and learn about him, this reader finds himself hoping that Mallory will somehow pull it off and escape the proloque fate. I did not want to put it down. Not only an adventure book, but also a touch of the romantic with the relationship of George and his wife Ruth.

As with all of Jeffrey Archer's books, this one is marvelously intriguing. Perhaps this one is different in that it has the twist of being about a real historical figure and a real historical event that never got the attention it deserved.
Climbing Everest was a seemingly impossible feat in the early part of the last century, but George Mallory was seemingly born to the task. Whether he made it to the top or not is the abiding question discussed.
Even knowing the outcome from the beginning, the story is completely compelling.

I had to keep checking to make sure this book was in fact fiction! It was a wonderful love triangle; George Mallory's love affair with the woman of his dreams and a mountain!
If you enjoyed Greg Mortensen's Three Cups of Tea. you will enjoy this.

Jeffrey Archer is a great story teller.

True story about George Mallory, who wanted nothing more than to climb Mt. Everest. Beautifully written and a story--no one will ever really know the end of for sure. I find this tragic as this was his dream and then he died before he could communicate with the world--but did he die on the way up or after reaching his dream? Maybe someday in the future there will be a way science can figure this out. Either way this is a beautiful read, and i like to dream-- he made it.

My first biographical fiction. It was a very interesting story but had a sad ending. Would be a good read for those interested in climbing and the story of the first British Mt. Everest climb.
