A long, slow slog, a purgatory of a book. Didn't finish it. Got perhaps 1/3 of the way through and just said "oh, forget it, life's too short." And I have waaaaay more interesting books to read!

Once again Louise Erdrich creates magic, interweaving stories of generations past and present, in a little town in North Dakota. Some of the characters are Indian, some white, some mixed, but all connected. At the center of this dance is a horrific crime that remains a mystery until the very end of the book.

I loved most of this book, as usual. I love all of Louise Erdrich's books. Probably the last quarter I didn't enjoy as much. The part dealing with Evelina at the mental hospital didn't seem to belong there, was completely unnecessary, and then once that was over, all of the explanation about what happened regarding the murder years ago, it was way too quick and not up to her usual literary style. The book should have been longer, not so fast to explain everything at the end.

I enjoyed this book. This was the first book I've read of Erdich's and some of the women in my book club liked her previous work better. It was quirky and all over the place, which I liked. I was often confused about what time I was in and which character was being referenced, but as I kept reading things made more and more sense.
