Alison, Emily, Spencer, Aria, and Hanna were once the best of friends back in the summer between seventh and eighth grade. They held private sleepovers, passed notes in homeroom, and shared their darkest secrets. Then a tragic incident shook the safe, suburban town of Rosewood: Alison vanished without a trace. Now years later, Alison still hasn't been found and the other girls are now in the eleventh grade, but are no longer friends.

Emily is the sporty teen, obedient, and every parents' dream daughter. Aria is back from Iceland, more mysterious and prettier than ever. Chubby Hanna has lost the weight and has transformed herself into a sexy "It Girl," while Spencer is a smart and preppy overachiever. Perfect lives, huh? Almost.

When strange, threatening messages began appearing from a mysterious "A", the girls must face their past and the dark secrets they thought they had buried forever.

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS is an eerie novel that gave me the chills with every chapter. Well-written and full of suspense, I'm sure it will attract many readers and also make a popular television show. With a cliffhanger ending, I definitely cannot wait for the sequel!

This book is so good and it is un-like any other teen-thriller I have read! Sara Shepard is a genius and if you know what is good for your daughter/niece/friend you will buy her this book and make her read it! :]

It's one of the first times that my son has volunteered to read a book that he didn't have too.

It is also one of the first books that my daughter and I have enjoyed together.

For being rated a teenage book it is great for adults.

After reading the books it is great to watch the TV show and point out the differences. It is a game between all of us: the first one that finds the difference gets a point.

This book is very suspensful, and entertaining! I would recommend this book to most people. Although there is a few parts that are not appropriate for children.

I have seen most of the episodes of Pretty Little Liars on ABC family (which I LOVED) and so I thought I would pick up the series. I actually got this as a free E-book on Kindle.

I did really like this book - it is actually very similar to the TV series, with one pretty big exception, the language. I would not recommend this book for anyone under 18. There is a LOT of language, teen drinking, innuendo, and some really adult situations in general. What's funny is that the show is really the same as far as the situations go (except that the girls don't smoke cigarettes in the show and there is not quite as much drinking). The relationships and major events of the story are the same. I think as I watched the show I started rooting for the girls and came to understand why they did the things they did, but, really, they do some pretty bad things!

In the first of many books in this series, the girls are all back in Rosewood three years after their "friend" Allison went missing. They are all dealing with some pretty big stuff and have changed a lot. Hanna is having run-ins with the law, Aria has found herself and hooked up with someone at a bar who turned out to be her new English teacher, Spencer is trying to live up to her sister's accomplishments and is kind of going after her sister's boyfriend, and Emily is fighting her parents expectations and is becoming more comfortable with her sexuality.
They are teenagers, so their choices aren't always the best. But making their lives more complicated is this unknown person "A" who keeps sending them text messages and emails teasing them and indicating that he/she will expose the girls' dirtiest secrets. The only problem is, no one knew those secrets except Alison! Who is sending the text messages??

The TV series is extremely intriguing and compelling. This book was definitely both of those things and I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

If you have seen the TV show then do not expect the book series to follow the TV series. The first book, "Pretty Little Liars' is similar to the first season of the TV show however, the rest of the books are nothing like the TV show. The books are very easy reads and are not challenging. I read each book in one day. However, after reading the books I notice hints in the TV show about who "A" is... that I would have otherwise not noticed.
