Between grad school and multiple jobs, Naledi Smith doesn't have time for fairy tales -- or patience for the constant e-mails claiming she's betrothed to an African prince.  Sure.  Right.  DELETE!  As a former foster kid, she's learned that the only things she can depend on are herself and the scientific method, a...  more »

Ledi (Naledi) is a hard worker who has had to work for everything she has. Her parents were killed in a car accident when she was a child and she has bounced from foster home to foster home growing up. She doesn't trust easily or let people in. As a result, she has few friends. Thabiso was born royalty and has never had someone tell him no. He is educated, but he's not had to work and pay for it. He was also betrothed as a young child to another young child. That child later disappeared with her parents. When she is found, as an adult 20 something years later, he wants answers & Ledi has no idea of her history or who he is.
Ledi has really had to deal with a lot of shit (to add to the above, she is a Black woman in STEM), but she does learn to speak up for herself. Portia, the person to whom she is the closest, doesn't know her complete history. As a result, I felt their relationship was fairly shallow. I'm also not sure how I feel about Portia (she drinks- a lot and wakes Ledi up in the middle of the night to let her in to sleep it off) & she doesn't seem to know what she wants to do with her life.
I did like the direction things took when Thabiso's real identity was revealed. There is a novel illness that no one seems to know how to treat/help/cure. I did learn (kinda) the reason why Ledi's parents left. I do think the ending was rushed a bit. An epilogue would have been nice to provide more of a wrap up to the ending (IMO).
I haven't looked at the synopsis for the other books in the series: Portia is Ledi's friend. Regina is Portia's sister (in wheelchair). Nyakalla (Nya) is Ledi's cousin (her dad id Alehk). Likotsi is Thabiso's assistant.
