Bailee, Texas Present Day

Pepper Malone, big city reporter, has landed in Bailee for several reasons. First of all, she has a great-aunt living there, and second, it's a quiet, peaceful place to recuperate from the disaster she left behind in Chicago. When she finds that her aunt is in a nursing home recovering from hip surgery, Pepper decides to hang around a bit, but only if she can get work at the local newspaper. When she approaches the editor of the Bailee Bugle, she overwhelms him with her enthusiasm and background, and Pepper finds herself in a world vastly different from Chicago.

Mike McCulloch, the slightly rumpled, soft-spoken editor, is stunned when Pepper asks for a job. Intrigued by the outgoing, urbane Ms. Malone, Mike hopes that her vibrant personality can rev up life for him. But with a past fraught with disappointments, Mike isn't going to put all his eggs in one basket. He's been burned before, although he's never met anyone quite as interesting as Pepper Malone. Mike has been raising his niece on his own since his hero brother perished in a car fire with the child's mother. Giving up all of his own plans, Mike reluctantly runs the family newspaper, carrying on for the generations that came before him. There's only one problem --- someone seems to want the newspaper, and Mike, to fail.

Pepper soon realizes that the quirky staff at the Bugle is protective of their quiet editor, and of the newspaper. The threats made against it and Mike are hard not to notice, especially one night when a man with a rifle menaces Pepper and Mike as they leave the office. Is Pepper getting too involved here? She's not one to hang around or make a commitment to anything or anyone, but the little town of Bailee is beginning to grow on her.

REWRITING MONDAY brings together a band of unique individuals who work together to deal with the threat to their beloved editor. Pepper is welcomed into their fold and, despite every intention to move on to bigger and better things, she begins to know what it feels like to belong. Will she and Mike be able to leave their pasts behind? Most important, will they all be able to find and deal with the unknown person trying to destroy all that they hold dear?

Jodi Thomas again delivers a delightful, character-driven tale of modern Texas. Readers will remember whom the town of Bailee is named after if they've read the Wife Lottery series, particularly THE TEXAN'S WAGER --- another touch of fun, along with the brief appearance of Luke from TWISTED CREEK that will keep fans on their toes. REWRITING MONDAY is heartwarming, heart-tugging, and just plain good reading.

Love Jodi Thomas and her tales of Texas. This story of how an outsider is welcomed by a community makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

This book was my introduction to romance novels. In a gentle way, it reminds me of the Jimmie Stewart movie, A WONDERFUL LIFE. The hero of this book gave up his dream years ago, when his brother died in an auto accident. Mike took over the family-owned newspaper in Bailee, Texas.

Mike is `going-through-the-motions' - not really living. On an intellectual level, he understands he has responsibilities that are important. On an emotional level, he is lonely and frustrated.

Then, Pepper Malone walks into the newspaper office. Pepper's hot-shot journalism career has crashed and burned! Fresh from a huge career mistake in Chicago, she is looking for somewhere quiet to lick her wounds and regroup. She is short on cash and options and asks for a newspaper job in Nowhere-ville, Texas.

Mike McCullough (and everyone on his staff realizes that Pepper) wears shoes that cost more than her weekly salary at the "Bailee Bugle."

This novel is filled with likeable characters and a suspenseful plot. I found it quick to read - because I couldn't put it down!

To me, Jodi Thomas' contemporary fiction lacks the punch of her historical novels; and that is probably my bias. However, this is a quality story by a gifted author.
