From the back cover: To John Putnam Thatcher, Sloan Guaranty Trust's intrepid VP, the merger looks from the outset to be a golden opportunity. ASI, a large water-fixture company, is prepared to enter the lucrative retail market, and their partner of choice is Ecker, a small, family-owned and family-run kitchen appliance company. But the deal soon springs a nasty leak when people in both companies sense personal and commercial disaster ahead.

In the midst of negotiations, an ambitious ASI manager, known for his scandal-mongering, is literally skewered to death at a trade show. And a suspicious fire wipes out Ecker's shipping records. Banking whiz-cum-amateur sleuth Thatcher is suddenly caught in an ever-widening web of corporate chaos and mystery.
