I do not know if this book had so many awkward sentences because it was translated from the German or if it just had sloppy editing. I frequently had to read sentences over several times and insert commas where they did not exist in order to make sense of them. Sometimes ever that did not help and I just had to let the sentence go. That aside, it does offer one a comprehensive overview of life in the Roman Empire--a good introduction.
