The legend of the seal people is curiously persistent around the western shores of the Highlands. The seal men, or selkies as they are known locally, are said to shed their skins at will and asume the likeness of humans.

A mortal who can steal a skin during this process of transformations is therby able to gain magical power over the selkie owner.
