The hero is Ruso, a doctor in the military whose career is fraught with change. His wife, Tilla, is outspoken and wants to learn to read and become a medico. They travel with Rome's Twentieth Legion and discover that mysterious deaths, injuries and fear permeates all the recruits from Britannia. The Roman officers do not respect the recruits and believe that the recruits just need discipline - discipline that causes death, injury and fear?

Can things get any worse? Ruso has been stripped of his rank and told that he is divorced from his wife because he went over the head of Accius to talk with Hadrian. Not only that, he is now cleaning the sewers. When Centurion Geminus disappears, the night guard finds him murdered. Ruso is accused of the murder and thrown into a cell. Tilla had suggested that they run away. Now he wishes that they had done so.

As the story unfolds, Ruso and Tilla discover who ordered the murder of Geminus but can never tell. However, Hadrian knows and releases Ruso warning him to keep his mouth shut.

It's a quick easy to read mystery with interesting characters that can keep the reader coming back again and again to see mischief they get into next.

Another enjoyable story in ongoing series involving Roman Army Doctor in Britannia in approx. 120 A.D. Ruso investigates problems with native (British) recruits during era of erection of Hadrian's Wall. Easy to read, historically interesting, frequently amusing.
