I have started Dictator by Robert Harris, the third book in his series about Cicero.  Happy Labor Day everyone!

Am finishing The Queen's Lover by Francine DuPlessix Gray, a fascinating portrayal of the last days of the king and queen of France.  The key protagonist was the queen's lover who relays the tale from his experience and in his words.  At times Axel's sister, Sophie steps in for a chapter or two.  It was fascinating to read what happened as much of the text comes directly from letters and Axel's diary.  At times I thought about putting this read aside but it provides an incredibly deep look at France, the king, Louis XVI, and the queen, Marie Antoinnette, and what happened that I could not stop reading.  So insightful!  So glad I read this one.

I just finished The Betrayel of Maggie Blair. It is set in Scotland in the late 1700s. It's about a young woman who is accused of witchcraft, but manages to escape execution with the help of friends and family. She travels to Edinburgh only to get caught up in the Protestant Rebellion against the King of England. It's a lovely read with beautiful characters in an intriguing setting.

I finished Dictator by Robert Harris, it was very good.  Now I have started The Devil's Workshop by Alex Grecian.  It's the third installment of his "Murder Squad" series.  I sort of remember that someone on this forum said that the book ended in a very frustrating cliff hanger, so I have books 4 and 5 in reserve on the bookshelf!

Read The Queen's Vow by C. W. Gortner.  Very, very good.  Queen Isabella was the first queen who lasted any length of time on the Spanish throne.  She cared deeply about the people, even those of Jewish background. but she and King Ferdinand are still maligned for the inquisition targetting the Jews of their country.  Gortner believes that he understood Isabella's personality and felt that she was a victim herself of the times and beliefs of those around her.  This king and queen faced conflict during much of their rule day after day, week after week, year after year.  Nevertheless, two rulers following their reign maintained the stable country.

I am reading a good Historical mystery No Cure for the Dead by Christine Trent. It is set in 1853 England. Book is about Florence Nightingale and nurse she finds dead. Interesting information about the days of early nursing.

I haven't been reading much h/f lately- I read Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, a wonderful re-telling of the Rumpelstiltskin fairytale and a murder mystery,  The Chalk Man by C. J. Tudor that sounded better in the description than in reality.  Now I've started Murphy's Law by Rhys Bowen.  I have to have an "American" entry for that h/f mystery challenge of Alice's!

Just started Mrs. Woolf and the Servants by Alison Light, historical but not fiction. I needed truth and to get away from the National News, fake or no!

Ah, another excellent HF mystery by Charles Todd.  Just finished Racing the Devil which was an exciting read.  Couldn't put it down until I finished it even though I suspected the correct individual as the murderer.  Well done!  Now reading The Lure of the Moonflower by Lauren Willig.
