This book is written by Larry Millett and is part of the "American Chronicles of John Watson, M.D.". It is a great mystery, and you will not believe that Arthur Conan Doyle did not write it himself!

The third book of the series in which Holmes again returns to the American midwest to investigate mystery and murder following the unearthing of an ancient viking relic. Again helped by Shadwell Raffety, Holmes and Watson again solve the case. The book was nearly as good as the first in the series...very enjoyable...well written and researched...a good series of books overall.

If you are a Sherlockian, you will likely not finish this book. If you are merely a Holmes fan, you may finish it and then wish you could get those hours of your life back.

Millett's version of Holmes seems to have eaten lead-based paint as a child. Gone are the brilliance and amazing deductions that define Holmes. Indeed, Holmes exists mostly as a foil for the launch of Millett's Holmes-of-America character. "Yes, I agree," said Holmes, "I was thinking along those lines myself." - occurs far too often.

I could go on but it gives the book more attention than it deserves. However, Millett is a published author and I'm not, so there is that.

I loved all the books in this short series. Millett has captured Watson's voice, as Doyle wrote it.
