I love this book and probably have read it about 3 times now. The title makes me feel silly though. The characters and the world are very well written. Its the type of book where you learn just enough about the world to know you are scratching the surface and that there is so much more to it. Like a real place. Anyway, this is the story of Jane. Plain Jane, a rich girl in a futuristic society, who is overshadowed by her famous and pushy mother. She lives literally in a castle in the clouds. Like her, Jane's friends are rich and idle and spoiled, removed from real life. One day Jane meets Silver - a robot so lifelike he is almost human, and falls instantly in love. From that point on she becomes irrationally obssessed with Silver. Jane engineers a way to get Silver and runs away with him. Throughout the book I felt like Jane became more emotional while before she was content to be led by others. In the end she grows quite a bit, as does Silver. This is a very bittersweet love story as well. I'm not surprised another reviewer cried at the end. There is a sequel - Metallic Love which occurs in the same world and refers to characters in Silver Metal Lover, but the story is separate.

Engrossing dystopian adventure-romance unfolding on a near-future Earth of all-too-realistic extremes of wealth and poverty. A girl whose intelligence, passion, and courage have been lying dormant under a spoiled existence finds the best parts of herself involuntarily awakened when she looks into the eyes of an experimental android. To others, he is an expensive plaything whose nobility and emotions are mere fabrications. But to her, he's a savior who can unlock her hidden potential, and whose love, and life, are in turn worth risking everything for.

Features an intricately developed environment the reader can easily lose oneself in, as well as equally masterful character development. Does an excellent job of immersing the reader in the experiences and emotions of the main character. One truly feels her yearnings for freedom and her pangs of desperation.
