Learn about colonial New England by studying the things the people left behind: chamber pots, gravestones, musical instruments, and trash heaps, to name a few. The author is an archaeologist and this is a scholarly book, but you don't have to be an archaeologist to read it. It's college level, but is well written and only 161 pages. I found it fascinating to learn about how people lived, thought and behaved in the 1600's-1800's--and how the culture changed over that time period and into today. He mainly concentrates on Anglo-American culture but also has one chapter (out of seven) which discusses an excavation of a free Black settlement from the end of the 18th century.
