Ever since I read Anne Rice's "Sleeping Beauty" novels, I have craved more adult fairytales. And it can't get better than this! Each story in Snow White, Blood Red -- the first part of the Snow White series -- has a dark and gothic undertone in it. And I marvel at the fact that the elements taken from Snow White are twisted and disarming -- thus, making this one of the most literary anthologies ever written. My favorite story is Patricia McKillip's "The Snow Queen" -- the brand of magical realism in the story is exquisite. "Snow White, Blood Red" is an excellent reading investment and I look forward to reading the other installments from this unique series. --from a review by Amazon user "ChicBookFriend" that says just what I would have said. :)

Fascinating take on adult fairy tales. Several are quite disturbing, but others are lovely! Very enjoyable read!

I'd had this book on my TBR for about 15 years now. I'm glad I finally got around to reading it, as the (mostly for adult) "fairy tales" in it were all quite good. (The only thing I didn't bother reading was the introductions because I just wasn't in the mood to care "why" these stories were written and basically was just in the mood to read the stories themselves.)

The first one alone snagged my attention because it was well-written and very interesting. The second one was the same. Some were original with fairy-tale inspirations (or rewritten from originals I had never read) and others were different interpretations of old favorites.

Overall, I'm glad this was a book I packed around with until I got around to reading it, because whereas normally I don't read a lot of short stories, this book held a number that were very memorable.

Intelligent, creepy, and inventive - just like the original fairy tales. Great book!

This series of short stories were exciting and scary and a little creepy. If Disney fables are not for you, maybe this will be.

Well, I was really excited about reading it...until I started reading it. The stories felt tame to me, and often ended abruptly. I do wonder if our society is more macabre and blunted toward horror since the 90's when this was published. Am now seeking more shocking, more deviant books of faeire tales for grown ups.

a good collection of darker versions of the stories we grew up with

I am thoroughly enjoying the short stories of fairy tale characters gone bad or is it fairy tales that should be. This book has several notable authors joining together to create an anthology of good reads.
