There had been a succession of Indian summer days in no rth central New Mexico, bright, crisp, clear. In the towering mountains behind the old capital city of Santo Cristo, nightmare temperatures fell regularly well below freezing, but in the city itself at an elevation of 7, 000 feet, bird baths remained relatively ice-free, and the ground had scarcely begun to harden. But there were ample signs that winter was at hand.
