There were parts of this book that captured my attention and parts that were really slow. I loved learning about the Chinese culture - especially the foot-binding and the secret writing of women. The beginning of the book was great, but I struggled through the middle. However, the end of the book was so fantastic. Though it was heart-breaking, the end presented an important moral lesson that I'm sure everyone can relate to.

I read this book for my book club. When I first heard about it and read the book's description, I was not at all impressed and thought it sounded like something I wouldn't like at all. While it was not a book I would normally have chosen to read on my own, I absolutely loved it. It is a wonderful story about a lifelong, changing friendship. I also found it interesting learning about ancient Chinese customs. Overall, a fabulous book.

I loved this book! It was a good story on the surface, and without feeling contrived, it also had some depth. The description of foot binding was so real. I felt both sympathy and frustration with the narrator.
