A great book for horse lovers, no matter the age. Kathleen Duey's writing is wonderful! She fluctuates from warm to sad to grave even graver to funny and carries you with her back to happy again. These 'Spirit' series book are great additions to the movie and help explain the origins of the handsome Spirit and shy Rain. Who their parents and grand parents were and what happened to them. Awesome!
This Spirit Stallion etc book in particular explains a lot. It reads like the movie. I am surprised, if the movie was based on the book, how word-for-word the movie was. Mostly. A few spots are different or explain more that was left unsaid, or the 'musical' spots. I enjoy the movie better now after reading the book. Again, it helped explain some things to me. Besides that, it is great reading!
I love how the horse' s body language is explained and how horses 'talk' to each other. If you know horses, it is easy to picture the events Duey describes. She clearly has watched horses and understands how they think and move...most of the time. My critique is that sometimes she throws in a few whinnies and actions that are far-fetched and unlikely for a horse to do/feel, but that's my opinion. It's fiction, anyway, so who cares!?
