Back of book says: Pulitzer-prize winning columnist William Safire is back with his third book based on his ever popular "On Language" articles for The New York Times Magazine. Safire continues his dramtaic dialogue with the "Lexicographic Irregulars," those readers and letter-writers who amplify, revile or applaud his forays into grammar and usage. Here he joins the diplomatic dust-up over the pronunciation of Caribbean, defends the virture of the virgule...and bears the slings and arrows of his readers' fierce and funny assaults with wit, scholarship and intimitable style.

I Say: Published in 1986, this is classic Safire. The format is this: an article on the vagaries of the English language and then the letters and comments, pro and con, he got about the article; often Safire then adds a rebuttal. Very funny for those of us who enjoy playing with the English language. Quite educational for all.
