This is the second in a trilogy about the European theatre of WWII. I found it to be much better than the first volume. Unlike a stuffy history book, Shaara goes into the conjectured feelings and thoughts of the major players on both sides. He details the inner workings of the decisions made, unintended consequences, intrigue, mistakes, miscalculations, luck, personality clashes, and tragic losses of lives. The reader is able to vividly realize the nuances at play at every turn of the war's progression. My main complaint is that the maps are woefully inadequate; at least in paperback -- too small and hard to decipher.
