After hitting bottom with depression I went for counseling with a wonderful lady who had me read several books by Melody Beattie. Stop Being Mean to Yourself was the last book that I read by her and it opened my eyes to how being mean to myself was a way of punishment for my depression and for how my depression hurt my family. Anyone who thinks they deserve punishment for anything going on in their lives should read this book, take notes, underline what you feel is meant for you, and then later re-read the book taking notes and then compare the notes. You will be amazed at how this will help you.

An enlightening blend of travel adventure and spiritual discovery filled with new ideas for overcoming the pitfalls of guilt and self-doubt,'Stop Being Mean to Yourself' is a compassionate tour guide for the troubled and the heartsick, for those who seek a happier place in the world. A tale that is at once modern and timeless, rich with the promise of personal discovery, it is a book about learning the art of living and of loving others--and ourselves. As full of suspense and excitement as it is of hope and encouragement, it is as rewarding for its pure reading pleasure as for the wisdom it imparts.

Her first book was great but this one was all about her journey following pagan rituals. BLECH! I threw away the book so no one else would have to read crap like this!

I've ready Melody Beattie books in the past, but this one is just awful. The writing style is poor and I found it condescending and aggravating versus helpful. I was so disgusted I actually threw this book in the trash, something I've never done before. My suggestion to others is to look somewhere else for guidance and comfort. This book will insult your intelligence.
