This is one of those books that will make you look at parenthood in a new different light. At least it had that effect on me.
The author talks about her personal experience with autism. She tells her story, what it was like to find out her son is autistic, and the challenges they faced. Her emotions in this book are very raw, and even if you've never walked in her shoes, you can relate to her as a mother.
She finds out about a mother and child from India. The child is autistic, just like her son, and the mother has taught him to write, something that most people thought was not possible.
So the book tells about the journey the author embarks on to meet this other mother and try to find out how she can help her own son. It's a human journey, full of sad and happy moments. I really enjoyed this book and it gave me a new understanding about autism and the families touched by it.

I read this book from a therapist's perspective. I am a speech therapist that has a growing caseload of children with autism spectrum disorders. This book is geared towards children with autism that are nonverbal or have limited communicative output. There is a large section at the end of the book that provides a good outline of how to apply this "framework" to a chid you may know.
