A collection of essays about notables (John Ericson, John Hanson, Carl Sandburg, etc.) and ordinary folks written on the occasion of the Swedish Pioneer Centennial, sponsored by the Swedish American Line. "If Uncle Nils and Aunt Mimi, conscientious as they were, could not afford to cultivate their niece's brain, they were resolved not to neglect her soul. At the proper age Blenda was sent north to Rockford to complete her study of the catechism and be confirmed. Soon after she was back on a farm near home caring for the ailing Russell family." Loyally caring for 'old Mrs. Russell' who suffered from TB and her grandson, when they all relocated to Urbana, Illinois, Blenda determined to attend school. "She had to begin at the fifth grade, but she did not mind."
