Written in 1973, set in modern times (I guess when you saw that "Federals" were called in, supposedly to no avail, it would have to be modern times.
Absolutely one of my favorite Kelton books. This one is a little different from his other "westerns" in that it is set in the 1950's rather than the mid to late 1800's. So, there are a few modern conveniences, such as automobiles! But, never fear, it is about ranchers and cowboys and the struggles of making a living out of the land.
Then came the drought, slowly strangling the land, and one by one the hardworking men of the region began selling out, moving on, giving up. But for Charlie Flagg it was time to stand and fight. He had cattle and sheep in his blood; no damn drought, no damn government would ever make him cut and run. To survive, Flagg would have to be just as harsh, unforgiving, and relentless as the Texas sun.

Good western genre book well written.Old Time rancher Charlie Flagg would not be turned from the land he loved the most. Even when he was faced the worst drought in years and the ranges turned into a blistering hell. Charlie would stay and fight to survive!
