I just for the first time used printed metered shipping now that PBS has it. I won't have to go to the PO and wait in line to mail a heavier book and using the PBS shipping with DC I'll get an instant credit. But I'm worried since it's printed about it tearing or getting wet and running the ink. Is it okay to tape over those labels, over the bar code and all over the whole label?

Well..The post office I use says not to tape over the barcode. Some of the new scanners can scan through the tape but most of the old ones can't. I was told I could tape over the whole label EXCEPT the bar code. Hope that helps :)

Having used both the old scanners and the new, the tape usually doesn't interfere. But it is an issue for some window clerks and their scanners. Wrinkled labels are more of an issue than the tape for carrier scanners. So my advice is if your local PO says don't tape over the barcode, don't do it. I tape over the entire label when I mail my books and haven't had any trouble.

I usually end up taping over the bar code, and haven't had any trouble either.

That is what worried me about using the labels, them getting ripped off. I did tape the lower portion of the bar code to protect the numbers. I love the idea we can now print postage on PBS. I don't usually use DC but I get a quick credit this way. I had thought if I keep having books take forever to get marked I might start using the paypal with DC to know they got there, this works better, I get a credit whether they mark it or not. I'll use it for my heavier books and think about using it when I run out of stamps for regular paperbacks. I always send my paperbacks first class.
