This is now on my list of my all time favorite books. Along with "The English Patient" and "Girl with a Pearl Earring", the quality of language and lyrical writing are a joy to read - you don't want it to end. The unique premise is thought provoking and the characters you come to know and care about - with an ending that is tender, beautiful and tragic. I never cry over books, but the ending of this one really got to me. Sorry, I'm taking my copy out of circulation as it's staying in my permanent collection and I'm recommending it highly to all of my friends.

I can wait for Niffenegger's next book. If she continues to write this well, I'll be a fan for life.

Definitely one of the best books I've ever read. True, the concept of the time-traveling takes a while to understand, and I don't think you fully do understand it, but I believe that's the whole point.

It truly is a wonderful and unique story. Such a tearjerker as well. Amazing amazing book.

If you start to read this and don't understand it, don't give it up right away. Give it a little while and you'll start to understand it and enjoy it.

This book is gorgeous! The story is a magnificent and unique story of, the time traveler's wife. It is a spiraling tale of two lives lived independently and shared. Their time, their past, their futures overlap. And yet, the husband lives in a world all his own with no control over when or where he is at any given moment. It is a fresh perspective on life, love, and cause and effect. This is book is a rare treasure, and a first novel at that! Kudos, Audrey! I cannot wait for your next book.

This is a book I can read over and over again. I've waited for the movie to come out, but it seems that it never made the screen. The story is fascinating, funny and heart wrenching. It grabs the readers interest, and seems to glue itself to the reader's soul. This is truly one of those "I can't put it down" books. If you are lucky enough to nab a copy of this classic, do it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The premise and style is fresh, which added to the experience of reading it. I think the author's experience as an artist added to the richness of the story. The sections dealing with making the paper and artwork fascinated me.
Two thumbs up!

I give the book five stars for the premise, the details, and the writing, and then I take back 2.5 stars for the sex on every page, the constant swearing, and the general crudeness. I realize that a good majority of people really don't care (or enjoy) a bit of dirt in their books, but there are a handful of us that, if warned, would not pick up the book in the first place. To those who boo my old-fashioned values - this review isn't written for you, it's written for those who want to know these things before ordering a book.

A love story, through time - sounds petty, but it isn\'t. This is a story about a man who slips through time, and on one of his excursions meets his wife that is, as the child she was. We follow them as he comes and goes, also meeting himself along he way. It works because of the skill of the writer and the depth of love and caring between the two characters. This is Wallace Stegner meets The H. G. Wells, a book about good people in very wierd situations who perform admirably.

This was a beautiful and heart-breaking story. This novel covers so many themes....love, destiny, second-chances, and much, much more. When I got to the end of this book, it was really hard to let Henry and Clare go.

This book is absolutely fascinating, and yet it's not one I would keep to re-read. It took me almost 2 weeks to get through it because even though I wanted to finish it, it didn't hold my interest strongly enough for me to read it quickly. I love the premise, of a man who time travels w/in his own life and can meet himself and visit his own past and future. I love the concept of a disease called chronological displacement. I love the storyline itself. But somehow I couldn't connect with the main characters, and that kept me from truly enjoying the story. I just felt that they were both way too self-absorbed. Still, a good one-time read, in my opinion.

I'll say it up front; the book is not perfect. There are a few moments of deus ex machina that stretch credibility - even for a time travel story - and a few sections where I wondered just where the author was going with the story. However, in spite of its flaws, I finished this more moved by anything I've read in a very long time. I fell in love with Henry and Clare early on, as the author's delicate prose sucked me in. I thought at first the 1st person/present tense, switching back and forth between the two characters, would be distracting, but it took no time at all to forget that was what she was even doing. Her voices at Clare's different ages were clear and distinct, and while I sometimes lost track of all the Henrys, I wasn't that bothered by it since frankly, Clare did, too.

I was entranced by the first two-thirds of the book, but the last third came with an ever-impending sense of doom, as the ending hinted at came barreling closer and closer. I read faster and faster, desperate to get to the full disclosure. I can't say that I regret it, either, in spite of the heartbreaking last few chapters. A keeper for my shelves, most definitely.

Excellent book. I really enjoyed reading it. I was a bit confused at the beginning when Clare met Henry but he had no recollection of her. I (quickly) realized that he never time travelled to see her in his 20s. He was older. It truly is a love story. I cried in several places especially where Henry realizes what the future holds. There really is never enough time to do the things you want.

I found parts of this book very vulgar. I stopped reading after about 90 pages because I found much of the language akin to an American Pie movie. If it were not for the unnecessary R rated sections I'm sure I would've finished and enjoyed this book.

Why I don't like this book:
It doesn't meet my standards against swearing, sex scenes, etc. That's why I am sending it out the door. I don't usually step off the wagon so to speak, but I did this time and I still don't know how I feel about that.
Why I like this book:
I really ended up caring about the characters, which means they were well drawn. I was amazed a book that so broke the rules of linear story telling could hold its own standard for storytelling together so well. I rather had the vicarious experience of someone doing the occasional misdeed and understanding why they would do it, tho I would not do it in real life. The love story gripped me and I do not like romance novels, etc. This was a real love story very much like Odyseus and Penelope (which they are compared to in the book). The science was interesting and I felt I could follow it a/or accept it for the plot. The ambiguities and ironies and twists of the story were far more than one book usually holds. On a basic sentence level there were impossible sentences that only made sense within the frame of the story, otherwise they would break too many rules of the English language. They were so much fun to reread and try to grasp.
This was a pretty good book.

This is the first book in a long time, that actually got me thinking. I love how the story plays out, and in the end I was near tears - which never happens. I'm going to hold onto this one for a little bit, maybe to reread it and see if I love it all over again.. I'd definitely recommend this book.

I'll have to swim against the current and say this won't be on my all-time favorites list. The story was interesting, but the overkill use of the F-word and the locker room depictions of the frequent sex scenes ruined the book for me. All the characters were carbon copies of one another, all of them self-absorbed potty-mouths. They all speak exactly the same way, as if they all were the same character.

There is no loyalty or real friendship between the characters. The only one I had much sympathy for was Gomez's wife Charisse, who herself was quite pathetic for putting up with her lech of a husband. No Kleenex for me as I approached the end of the book, and then the incident at end between Clare and Gomez made me want to throw the book at the wall. Why ruin a perfectly good and sentimental ending?

The author acknowledges so many who helped were with the book. Apparently, no one cautioned her against the overuse of vulgarity. But, evidently, the masses either don't seem to care, are willing to overlook it, or are themselves used to it. An interesting book was turned to camp.

Not recommended if you are offended by repeated F-words or vulgar depictions of sex.
Sorry.

Really engrossing. I found it hard to put down, wanting to find out what happens next. The movie keeps plugging away at the fact that it's a love story, which it is, but I found it to be more than that. It also goes into whether or not we can change our fate and the ramifications of a life that you can't control.

The idea for this story was very creative. The characters were lovable, and there were some genuinely amusing scenarios that arised from Henry being a time traveler. However, there was a lot of language in this book, particularly, the f word, that I found wasn't necessary. Also had a bit more sex than I care for, but like I said the story was original. I give it 3.5 out of 5.

This is one of the few books that made me cry at the end. You'll start to view time not as a linear, straightforward concept, but as random, unpredictable gift. Much like love. You'll learn to appreciate the "time" you have with the one you care about, to appreciate the stages of development - physically, emotionally, or intellectually - that he or she goes through at his or her own pace. You'll feel privileged to simply be a part of that and to be able to participate in that, shared life. Beautiful book.

At first I wasn't sure about the concept for this book. Henry, who involuntarily travels through time, weaves in an out of Clare's (his wife) life. After about 10 pages I was hooked. It's a love story without being sappy. Clare experiences Henry in chronologically but each time she meets him (when he is not from her present time) he is a different age, looks different. It is a beautiful novel.

My husband and I both read this book because he has a fasination with time travel plots.
This book has a great plot line and once you get into the flow of it's unique style is hard to
put down. Fasinating premise on which the plot is based and very well written

We were both disappointed with the language used in places, the sex
or sexual talk used and the seedy stuff that has been added to this otherwise great story. We usually just read "clean" books.

We have enjoyed discussing the book and the twists, turns and surprises that went with it.

This book was okay. I was excited to read it and then was just disappointed at the lack of activity throughout the book. The start was slow - just trying to figure out what was going on and how it worked. Then when I started to like it, nothing else happened. He time traveled and they fought... nothing else.

I also didn't like the lead male character very much. I have difficulty liking a book when I don't like the lead.

This book will disorient you in the beginning. I feel this is necessary to help you understand Henry's problem. Keep pushing on and I promise it will start to make sense. Before you know it you'll be incredibly invested in this remarkable story of a bizarre affliction that led to a Love that withstands the seriously unconventional boundaries of time. Not only do you start to realize that this could actually be happening, you start to feel like it's happening to you. A tragedy from the very beginning, this book crosses sci-fi with love-story so eloquently and with a grace that I've never before seen in literature. It's the only book that has ever made me cry. Thank you Ms. Niffenegger.

I was so excited to read this book- and was so disappointed once I did. The concept was fascinating, and I love time-travel themes. The writing style, however, was too brash for me. A great deal of the plot seemed to revolve around the sex lives of the characters. The characters were very foul-mouthed, as well; I have never met a women who uses the language Claire does. It was difficult to like her or Henry. I will not be reading another book by this author.

I would have enjoyed the book more if the language had not been offensive. The author was over used the F word. Too many F words coming out of the female heroine. She also referred to her private areas using the C word. I don't think a normal woman would use the C word to describe her innermost parts. Maybe a man in the company of other men but not women. I also had problems with the 41 year old Henry having carnal knowledge of the barely turned 18 year old Claire. There are other aspects of the book I did not like but that would be spoiling it for those who would like to read the book. I have always like watching movies and television dealing with time travel. That aspect of the book was enjoyable and the author did have a poetic flow to her writing. It was enjoyable to read when you didn't have to read the vulgar dialogue. For this reason I won't be recommending this book to anyone. This book is supposed to released in a movie at Christmas. I may or may not see it depending on rating.

I found the concept of the book -- a man who time travels and is able to visit his wife's past and get to know her before he knows her -- to be very intriguing. Intellectually, I really enjoyed the book and wrapping my head around the plot and the timeline, which was confusing at times. However, I had some real problems with the book as well. I found some of the content much too sexually explicit. And the fact that the adult Henry starts visiting the child Clare (so he can meet the woman/child who he will eventually meet and marry in the "present") is more than a little creepy. There were also a few plot problems. By the time Henry and Clare are together as a couple in the here and now, Clare has already known him since she was a child and could have prevented certain outcomes by telling him what she already knew. Mostly I was annoyed because by the time the book ended, it seemed that Niffenegger had forgotten some of the rules of time travel that she had set, and invented new ones, to suit her purposes of wrapping up the novel. Again, it was intriguing and a very interesting book, but frustrating and creepy/gross (at times), too.

First thing i have to say, is that i was reluctant to read this book because of it's unlikely premise. Secondly, i am soooo curious as to how the author kept everything straight when she wrote this book!!!! The reader doesn't have to pay close attention to dates or the such, because it is written so that one can follow it without tediousness. I'd have to describe this book as quite intruiging, interesting and UNIQUE. A good story of the endurance of love (i, personally would never put up with such inconsistency). The book does twist in an unforseen way towards the end... Very enjoyable read!!!

I was 50/50 on this one. I do enjoy novels that involve time travel, and I find it interesting how events are handled when it comes to changing the past and the effect on future(present) events. In that respect, I liked the story. The past/future was intertwined in a way that I hadn't seen written in quite that amount of detail.

The details are where the novel fell a bit flat for me, though. First and foremost, the author is obviously obsessed with art/hobby of making paper. The female protagonist, Clare, is an artist who makes paper. What does this have to do with anything in the book? Nothing. Yet it is described in great detail, and is always worked into scenes until it becomes tiresome. You could have plugged any vocation/avocation into the book and it would have made as much sense. It really was an unnecessary "character" in the book, and it took up a lot of space.

I think the book could have been amazing in the hands of a good story editor. The bones were there for an incredibly mind-bending book, but it got mired down along the way. It's still an interesting read, but it will probably be a love it/hate it book for most.

This story is about a woman who lives a natural life span and her husband who has 'chronic displacement disorder' and travel through time. He is not able to control the time travel and mostly travels to the past. He first meets his (future) wife when she is 6 yrs old and travels back to meet her through out her life - they finally meet in the present timeline when she is 20-something, but he doesn't know her (because his time travelling to her past has not yet happened for him). Great romance story with a twist. Definitely recommend this book.

I just finished this book and I'm sad that it's over. I could almost see a sequel. I always miss the characters. I thought the writing was great and the story was very intruiging. I can see why some people would say that it's a little boring, but it was not boring for me. Maybe if you're used to reading fast action books it might be a little slow but I read it in under 3 weeks. The way the book was written was very interesting. I really enjoyed how the author gave bits and pieces and then filled in the gaps throughout the story; very well written and a unique idea that exceeded my expectations. The characters were interesting if sometimes a little difficult to relate to. However I did find myself wanting them to succeed and loving them. The story is just SO fascinating!

They are making this book into a movie and I believe it will show sometime late in 2008 or early 2009. I am very excited because Rachel McAdams will be playing Clare and I really like her. - I don't know if I can post links here, but I'm going to try; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452694/

This book is an incredible experiment in time organization. The author, somehow, makes everything work. She keeps situations in their places while moving people through and around time and back again. Superb workmanship!
If you can get beyond the first few incidents of jumping around time, with ages varying all over the place, it is in irresistible love story. I didnt have any problem with the dates and time, but some people might. I did find myself looking back to the dates in the previous chapter or scene to see where I was coming from, but it never caused a mental stumbling block for me. There is a lot of sex, but only a few graphic situations. Mostly, you just know what is going on. Also, there are some offensive words, but spoken in the voice of the times (60s, 70s, 80s) so I credited the author with keeping the verbiage time-related and didnt let these slights interfere with how much I enjoyed the story. I fell in love with the characters myself, and really, really fell in love with the story.

This book is at the top of my short list of truly amazing books. Exceptionally well-written, the author draws you into the story through the endearing characters and perfectly-crafted plot. Don't get the impression that this is some science fiction drama, because it is far from it. At its core it is a love story, but one that is made richer, deeper, and more urgent by the involuntary time travel of the man. A touching and believable tale that will stay with you long after you've finished the book.

This book was the worst I have read in awhile. I do feel it's a good story and worth telling but I think this one breaks the golden rule the movie will be better than the book.

I will note that this is partially because I hate the writers style of writing. The plot line was great just the style was horrible.

This book was absolutely amazing, and I don't use that term often. It's a blend of mystery, science fiction and romance. With time travel as the subject, it's bound to be a bit complicated (and make you flip back and forth a few times); but it was completely engaging and I could barely put it down. I loved trying to make sense of it all.

This was a read selected by my book club, and honestly, I would never have chosen it for myself. The book intrigued me, but I can't say that I loved it or suggest it as a must read. The storyline was hard to follow, with all the jumps in time, I often forgot what was happening. The love story was beautiful and unique, but they sure do love to get intimate! I kept thinking of Quantum Leap and the Journeyman, as I read. It'll be interesting to see as a movie, maybe it will make more sense then. I did like the way the author sets up the rules for his time travel. Great way to get around anachronisms and it also provides for some humorous incidents.

Overall, an interesting read, but not my favorite. Unique premise and setting.

Given the recent crop of books entitled The So-and-so's Relation, The Time Traveler's Wife is not the best title for this unique beautifully written and moving story. It is more about the love between two people: Henry, for whom time travel is migraine-like in its involuntary onset and uncontrollable duration, and Clare, his once-and-future-wife who grew up with periodic visits from an older Henry since the age of six. Niffenegger succeeds in portraying Henry and Clare as multi-dimensional characters in each stage of their time together, convincingly demonstrating their love is a triumph of love over time instead of a science fiction laced Lolita. This type of time travel lends itself to more meditative reflection on different selves over time rather than free will, space-time continuum, and technology. It masterfully suspends the real-life notion that life is defined by more than love for one other. In summary, it's a deeply meditative tale of joy and disappointment, anticipation and longing, which pulls on the heart strings with the strength of giant waves which keep Odysseus from Penelope.

I found this book to be a surprisingly wonderful story. I hesitated about reading it because I do not read romance and the title implicates a possible romantic tale (boring). Upon finally picking it up, I was drawn in immediately. It's woven in a way that most of it is from Henry's (the time traveler's) perspective. As he bounces into different time periods (mostly, but not always, within his past life) he is able to visit with the people in his past and even frequently visits with himself. Not being able to control these jaunts into time, he also encounters the complications and difficulties caused. Going into the reasons he does this or the difficulties he encounters would give away too much. But it is a thoroughly enjoyable read and a beautifully woven tale-and I laughed and I cried-and I loved it! Highly recommended!

*plot details given in review (ending is not given away)*

I had no intention of reading this book because I'm often disappointed by the popular trends of contemporary lit. However, I've read/heard/seen such mixed reviews on the novel, that I had to find out for myself. And, I was pleasantly suprised. Overall I thought it was a good novel and a fresh, unique idea. Niffenegger is a good writer, and I look forward to reading more of her work. I've heard that others were confused by the time traveling and had a difficult time keeping track of dates and events, but I didn't find that to be a problem for the most part. I was wrapped up in the story and couldn't put the book down.

A couple things I didn't like: I felt their relationship was unrealistic. Obviously, when dealing with a story based on time travel you have to keep an open mind, which I did, and I think it's a cool concept; but, I didn't have much faith in their relationship. Which brings me to Henry himself. I feel like he was portrayed as a sleazebag. He drank too much, treated women horribly, slept around, did drugs, stole, was arrested multiple times, and because of these things, he had a horrible reputation. To top it all off, he was a time traveler and was never around! Tell me, what did Clare see in him!? If he didn't have all of those negative qualities, then I could understand why she waited around for him.

That was my biggest frustration. This review is getting too long, so I'll end by saying that, despite my skepticism, I thought it was really good, and I'll probably reread it in the future.

I think I have literally read this book 30 times and I still laugh, cry, and get enraptured by the story. Claire and Henry have the kind of love that we can only ever dream of finding. They have seen the worst and the best of one another all throughout their lives; they are cosmically connected to one another. If I ever believed in fate, it would be because of a story like this. Niffenegger makes you feel the longing, love, sadness, despair, desperation that Claire and Henry feel but also the joy. Everyone should read this book. It makes you think about love and romance in a completely different way.

This is an excellent book. I finished it in 2 days because I almost couldn't put it down! It is a story of a man who has a genetic disorder that causes him to travel back in time (and rarely forward in time), told from his point of view alternating with his wife's point of view. At times the book is a little difficult to follow because it jumps back and forth to different time periods. There are certain parts (like the Down's Syndrome part) that just jump out at me and feels like a stab in the heart. Excellently written and very intriguing.

The premise of the book was great. Claire lives a normal chronological life, while Henry bounced around from date to date at different ages. That was the only positive I could find...a great premise. I found the story boring and long-winded and I cared nothing for the characters. I found myself having to figure out with each jump exactly where Henry was coming from and what did he know about Claire and what did she know about him. It was a mass of confusion and it could have been sooooo much better. I was very disappointed and too happy to ship this one out.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Genre: Fiction

Henry DeTamble is just your thirtysomething average guy â he's a librarian, is in a relationship, and likes to go out and have a few drinks â except he time travels at any given moment and leaves a pile of clothes behind, and when he comes back he is absolutely naked!

Clare Abshire is your average little girl â she has picnics in the meadow, goes to school, and lives in a huge house â except a naked older man shows up in the meadow one day and tells her he's a time traveler!

The first time Clare meets Henry he is time traveling â 14 years later she meets him in his present time. A romance grows between them and Henry and Clare attempt to work out a life together dealing with his time traveling.

I was dreading the end of this book as it approached. I became so attached to Clare and Henry that I didn't want it to end. I must warn you, this book is a tear jerker â at several points throughout the book. I absolutely loved this book. The characters are so real, true events are used, and the basic rules of time travel are addressed as well. The 600 pages just flew by! The book is also written in a humorous way â just wait for the part about Henry's dreams, I couldn't stop laughing.

I would recommend this to anyone â men and women alike â everyone will find something to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars

I have to say I really enjoyed this book. From the first page I was hooked and couldn't put it down. I read it in record time and truly didn't want it to end. I loved Henry and found him to be charming, funny, witty, and of course tragic. I thought the story flowed well, and I enjoyed the flip flopping of traveling back and forth in time. Only a handful of times did I get confused and needed to back track to keep on top of dates etc. I enjoyed the love story portion of the book between Henry & Clare but honestly that wasn't my favorite part. For me, the parts where Henry would vanish and end up in weird & exciting places (like naked in the library & especially naked in the cage) and he'd have to scramble to avoid being arrested, or stranded etc was where I got the most enjoyment. Henry was so likeable a character that I found myself sad not to know him in person, in real life. TTTW is an incredibly entertaining & fairly well written, fast paced book that for the most part you will thoroughly enjoy. That being said there were definitely areas that could have been better:

The character development of Kimy, Gomez & Charisse was lacking. I wanted to know more of Kimy. And certainly Gomez had huge holes in development. I picked up early on his feelings for Clare (when all 4 were in the book store together and he looked at her longingly and Clare `chose Henry'). Why didn't the author explain more about his feelings? Why wasn't there more conflict between the dynamics of the group? I find it hard to believe that all 4 were so close when most everyone at one time or another knew of Gomez's desire for Clare?

Henry talks a lot of his angst at having to return and watch and re-watch his mother's death. Not once is this explored in the book, given how often he time travels why do we not get to go and explore this and delve deeper into how this affects him?

The author goes over and over in mind-numbingly boring detail descriptions of a game of pool, how she designed and made wings for Henry, or directions from one street to another. I really had to skip over these parts. These annoyances were not enough for me to rate this book 1 star, the way others have but they were certainly enough of a distraction that they propelled me to skip pages which is something I really don't like to do when reading a book.

Lastly I'm not sure how to explain this part, or put my finger on exactly why I feel this way but the ending was anticlimactic for me. I felt the beginning and middle and of the book was very well thought out, fast paced and kept me wanting more. As the book neared the end (especially the portion where Henry gets thinner, older and is near the end) I found the book was moving too fast and didn't allow the reader the respect or time we deserved. The last few chapters and the end all fit a little too neatly into a perfect box with a perfect ribbon. I wanted to know what Henry was feeling as he was getting older and thinner. What was each time travel experience like in comparison to his previous younger years? How did he feel about having a daughter that had the same issues/problems as him? How did he feel beyond the predictable anger of losing his feet? And how did he feel about his end coming so soon? Why was all this not explored enough? While I enjoyed the book immensely and rank it as one of my top 5 favorites and I would recommend it to anyone who asks, I still feel it wasn't 100% there and given the talent of the author I would have expected a little more effort with these small details.

I read this book quite a while ago. Still, I have fond memories of the ride it took me on. This is a tender love story with a twist; the Time Traveler alluded to in the title. Time travel is used as a device in which a man, through some kind of freak disease, is able to travel to different points in a woman's life. In fact, the man has no control over where in time he's going to end up.

The book is funny, yet moving. exhilarating, yet contemplative.

Very few books have had the privilege of hooking me from the opening line. "The Time Traveler's Wife" is one of them. I first set out to read "The Time Traveler's Wife" because it fit into my Eponymous Challenge, and because I wanted to read the book before the movie came out. (By the way, the movie "The Time Traveler's Wife" is in production right now. It stars Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams and is set for release some time in November 2008.)

"The Time Traveler's Wife" is the story of Henry and his wife Clare. Henry has the ability to travel through time. However, he does not have the ability to control his time travels. This enables him to see his wife Clare as she's growing up, but it also forces him to re-live painful experiences over and over again.

If you've read "The Time Traveler's Wife", I'd love to start a discussion with you. If you haven't read "The Time Traveler's Wife" yet, I am fearful to say too much in my review. But I highly highly recommend that you read the book before the movie is released in (or around) November.

I didn't have any expectations when I started reading this story. Frankly, I didn't even know what it was about. I believe I got the book because of a rec from PBS, but it had been sitting on my shelf for a better part of two years. I gave it to a co-worker to read and she insisted that I needed to read it. Well, I finally did and all I can say is WOW! What a great book. It's basically about a guy named Henry who time-travels, his relationship with his wife, Clare, their inability to conceive and the attempt to stop or, at least, control Henry's time-traveling. Henry cannot control when he goes or where he goes. I experienced many emotions while reading this book: happiness, sadness, laughter, wonder, awe. It's a beautifully written novel that will stay with me for some time. It's definitely one of the best books I've ever read.

I couldn't put this book down... it was really engrossing. I had to flip back and forth several times b/c of the shifts in time as Henry travels in time. This could be annoying to some, but the markers of the date and character's ages at the beginning of each section make it possible to keep track of who is who and when it is happening!! Very unique kind of love story. Made me really think about the consequences of time travel... in the same way the movie Somewhere in Time (with Christopher Reeve) did. I recommend it.

The Time Traveler's Wife is a love story about a man who involuntarily travels through time and the woman he loves. While the time traveling is an important aspect of the story, it is not the focus of the story. It is really about the love story and how a relationship evolves and survives amidst the trials and tribulations of life, both everyday struggles and those introduced by his condition. I enjoyed the book a lot. I related to the characters and liked how they were not without flaws. It is a beautiful story that I think does a great job of representing a marriage and relationship as it evolves over time.

This was an incredibly rich and textured story of love and relationship in a world where nothing is certain. Clare's husband, Henry, has a disorder that causes him to have uncontrollable "seizures" that carry him physically out of the present to other times and places. Henry's story weaves in and out of the past and the present and the future while Clare's narrative follows a linear path of time and place. Clare never knows when Henry will leave or how long he will be gone. This story reminded me why I love my husband so much. There were moments in this novel that were so true- loving someone else is never simple or easy, but it is so worth it.

"Henry De Tamble, a rather dashing librarian at the famous Newberry Library in Chicago, finds himself unavoidably whisked around in time. He disappears from a scene in, say, 1998 to find himself suddenly, usually without his clothes, which mysteriously disappear in transit, at an entirely different place 10 years earlier-or later. During one of these migrations, he drops in on beautiful teenage Clare Abshire, an heiress in a large house on the nearby Michigan peninsula, and a lifelong passion is born. The problem is that while Henry's age darts back and forth according to his location in time, Clare's moves forward in the normal manner, so the pair are often out of sync. But such is the author's tenderness with the characters, and the determinedly ungimmicky way in which she writes of their predicament (only once do they make use of Henry's foreknowledge of events to make money, and then it seems to Clare like cheating) that the book is much more love story than fantasy."~Publishers Weekly

I could not put this novel down. I am fascinated by time travel and this book dealt with the realities of someone being able to time travel. I was sucked into the life of Henry and Claire....

There are plenty of reviews here already so I'll try and stay away from plot-related comments and just offer my personal reaction. I put off reading this for a long while. Partly because I seem to have a natural aversion to anything surrounded by hype, and partly because I knew it was going to be a tear jerker, and I think maybe because I read in public so often, I don't always feel comfortable with books that make me cry. It had been sitting on my shelf forever, and I finally decided it was time (though I saved the end for the comfort of my own home). I can see why some might not like it, but I fell into the camp that did. Was it perfect? Definitely not. But as a story, I found it extremely compelling, extremely moving, and one of few books that I could see myself reading again. I don't say this often, as I usually just read and then pass it on, but this one's staying on my shelf. The themes stay with you after you're done reading.

I love this book. I have read it multiple times (I just finished reading it again this morning). It flows well with intense and well written characters. It is heart wrenching, beautiful, intense and an incredible story.

With that said, I have some minor problems with the story that intensify as the book continues. This is the ultimate "mary-sue" story. A Mary Sue is a term in fanfiction for a story that the writer writes about themselves as the heroine. Audrey Niffenegger is a fiery redhead, and an avid reader who works in paper arts and lives in Chicago. The main character Clare is a fiery redhead who loves to read, works in paper arts and lives in Chicago. There is a fine line between writing what you know and writing yourself into a fantasy universe. I love to lose myself in a story, but when the writer writes a story seemingly for only herself, it is hard to become completely enveloped.

A few other qualms. First of all, every copy of this book I have read comes with questions at the end of it for thought. Had I read a teacher's copy and another one didn't include that, this wouldn't be an issue. However I believe Niffenegger wrote these questions herself. Some of them are absurd and way too full of themselves. She penned a fantastic book, but I think it got to her head.

Secondly, there were a lot of holes. For example, Henry thinks on one page about how Clare's friend said something odd to him at the wedding. What she said was never revealed. Generally, Niffenegger was very good about eventually filling in the full story, entire conversations, etc. However there were numerous events which contradicted themselves and a handful of unanswered questions which though minor, were worthy of mention.

Finally, the major one that people who aren't nitpicking will notice is this book's intensity. Everyone loves SO intently. A widower loves his wife and loses his life to her for 30+ years after her death. Clare sits and pines away for her dead husband 50 years, waiting for the promised single moment she gets to see him again. An ex-girlfriend who wasn't that close to begin with (the book says it was a relationship where they both loved to torment the other) intensely loves the protagonist enough to kill herself. There is a time for grieving, then people move on. The characters in this book can't seem to get past the grieving stage.

Despite me airing my grievances with this novel, I highly recommend it. My qualms begin in the final quarter of the book. By that point, you're already too sucked in to put it down.

Excellent book, decided to read it when i heard of the movie and absolutely loved it. Clare and Henry share a love story that crosses all boundaries including time. I usually do not like books that switch times, but this one was something special and I really enjoyed it. The book kind of follows Clare's life so it is somewhat linear. I must say it again, excellent book. Took me 2 and a half days to read it, with 2 under 2 and a husband...not an easy thing to do.

In The Time Traveler's Wife, Clare and Henry endure a unique relationship. Sometimes they are married. Sometimes they are not. Sometimes Clare is a little girl and Henry is an middle-aged man. Sometimes they are the same age. Sometimes Clare remembers their long history together, while for Henry it is as if he has only just met her.

These two people have the typical relationship except for one aspect: Henry has an unusually disease----spontaneous time travel.

One moment they will be sitting at the dinner table and the next moment Henry has simply vanished. He has traveled somewhere else in his lifetime. Clare will finish her meal and wait for him to come back. Later he will return, sometimes in good health, sometimes shaken from the dangers of traveling through time.

Is this novel a love story or science fiction story? It's a normal romance except for one thing: Clare endures Henry's chronal infirmity with nomality. She lives through his time travel episodes as if it were something more well-known like an epileptic fit. A true love exists between them.

What a beautiful love story and a heartbreaking tale. Definitely a must read. Despite a lot of time traveling, I didn't feel mixed up at all. The author, Audrey Niffenegger, does a great job of keeping the reader on track.

And when it got me, all of a sudden I loved the first 2/3 too. If you read this book, you can't try to "figure it out," the how's of time travel. I liked this story a lot and even shed a tear at the end, but it was relatively easy for me to put down, also. At first, it's hard to get a handle on how the time travel works, and as you get into it, you don't even notice it.

I was intrigued by the idea that Henry spent so much time (when he traveled into the past) visiting his wife as a little girl. The result is that when they finally meet in the present, she has known him basically her whole life and he's never met her. I liked that the visitation of a forty-something man to a little girl seemed just like part of the love story and not Humbert Humbert-ish. Well done. The characters seemed very real and human, but it's written in such a classic style that the occasional use of a glaringly "modern" word as part of the characters' speech really stands out. Would recommend it, and will re-list it after I lend it around to friends.

While an original love story that twists and turns through time and makes the reader question the issues of fate vs. free will vs. determinism vs. God, this novel ultimately peters out at the end and falls flat. Honestly, it is to be expected for a first-time novelist who took on such heavy, literary material mixed with science fiction. Good endings are difficult to write, and how satisfying could an ending be for these two star-crossed lovers who are trapped by time? Having said that, the rest of the epic journey is well worth the ride, albeit a long and winding one.

Ehhh....I had high hopes for this book. It was raved and raved about. I wanted to read it before watching the movie, so I finally got my hands on a copy. And I was not impressed. The story was pretty interesting, but I was mostly disturbed by the "F$#%" word used OVER AND OVER AND OVER. I do not swear and I hate books that are filled with it. I don't know if there were more then maybe a handful of chapters without the word F*@# in it. Come on! Just removing the foulness and the crewdness of the language would have improved this book.

The main concept was great. The time travel was nifty. The language stunk.

I really hope the movie doesn't have the same crude language...

This book was a very strange read for me. I didn't really care for it, but I couldn't put it down either. I am not sure I understood it, or any message the writer was trying to convey. It was well written and with believable characters. But to me it was depressing. The whole idea that the main character time-traveled spontaneously was kind of dumb to me. I couldn't relate to it.

The fact that they are married for like 11 years and he doesn't remember their first "time" together until he's 41 and she's 18 is just...well...weird. Gross weird.

I kept on reading it waiting to see what would happen next. I definatly had mixed feelings after reading this book. I liked the way Niffenegger incorporated time travel into a romance. It ended with no surprises though which was a bit disappointing. I would recommend it hoping that someone else would enjoy it more than I did.

It puts you into an alternate universe that reads as so plausible that you can truly believe in its existence. Though the premise of the story is just a bit far-fetched, the author does an excellent job of fleshing out the characters and making them believable. Hard to say...I started off mesmerized, got fairly bored pretty quickly, then really interested again, etc. But, it got to the point I was more interested in the technicalities of the plot than I was of the characters...not good. And this author is great with plotting and twists. Ex: a pregnancy; meeting up with dead people. But for me, there are rules of time-travel, even in fiction, and she broke them. That took a lot away from the book for me.
However, that said, it is worth reading.

All the jumping around in time was just confusing and didn't work for me. I disliked this book and will not be reading it again, though I did finish it.

Looking back on the book now, from a distance of several years, all that remains is a strong feeling of distaste and dislike. I can't help feeling that it has been greatly overrated and that some of the overrating is due to people's being (mistakenly, IMHO) impressed by the sheer novelty of the idea of Henry's malady. Novel, it is, but it is not enough to compensate for the book's bad qualities: confusion, constant obscenity, and poor writing (cardboard characters, for one thing).

Dear Audrey Niffenegger,
You made me cry. Will you do it again, soon? Oh, and Claire is sexy. Can you get me her number?
-Tony H

This was an extremely difficult book to part with. I wanted to read it again the minute I finished.I only posted it because over a thousand folk here are wishing for it and keeping it seemed selfish (and I'm getting right back on the wish list!)
It's been a fairly long time since I happened across a book I LOVED. Especially a book ABOUT Love---But love this book I did & do.
The story contains an improbable premise which by the end transcends metaphor to seem metaphysically (& quantum physics-ally)not only possible but accurate.
There's a large dose of Truth (capital "T" most definitely) in these pages.
Love, longing, humanity at it's best and worst--Joy & pain overflowing.
"World enough and time" indeed. I laughed aloud and sobbed even louder --- this writer may not even know herself how deeply she understands longing, love. & the metaphysics of Time and the Soul-- but to this reader it got through completely.
I hope Ms. Niffenegger writes again-- I'll be waiting.

I didn't see the point. The book was interesting to read once you understood what was going on, but why did it happen? I kept waiting for the interesting thing we were supposed to learn. We could have at least learned why Henry travels through time, or why he had rules about it, or what lessons we could have learned from it. I couldn't see that there was a point. It just happens. Everyone who knows about it is fine with it. They don't seem surprised with it or ponder on it. They just accept it. That didn't seem realistic. None of his friends thought too much about it.

The book was a bit of a slow-starter, and left me wondering what the point of the story was, but it picked up and I enjoyed it very much. One of the best books I have ever read. It has all the qualities of a good contemporary literary novel with all of the qualities of the classic summer page turner. Audrey Niffennegger is truly gifted. She has crafted a beautiful love story that reveals how people learn to love deeply in spite of the hardships that can tear others apart. The suspension of disbelief might be difficult for some, but the story triumphs even over that. I absolutely loved it. Whew! I'm exhausted! I was captivated from the beginning and shed a few tears at the end. (I'm really an emotional sap when it comes to books.) The one thing that bothered me was that I had a difficult time keeping track of Henry's time travels in the beginning. I was overanalysing his and Clare's ages and when I finally just let that go and focused on the story I enjoyed it more.

Love truly transcends space and time - at least that's what I took away from this book. I know I am 'late to the dance' on this one, but I will be recommending it to a few friends.

This was a national best seller when it came out back in 2003. (Or at least that is the copyright date on the copy I have.) Reviews are a bit mixed, with many loving it and some hating it.

In something of a rare event for me I am going to come down on the side of the masses and say I really, really liked this book.

To explain why, though, I need to directly address what I think is the big complaint against it: problems that result from the main plot device. And note that I'm not giving anything away here... no spoilers.

There are two main characters - the entire book is told from the POV of one or the other - the time traveller and his wife. Niffenbegger saddles her hero with a real doozy of a problem: he can't hang onto his place in time and space with any reliability. With some frequency he just disappears to some other time and location - poof - leaving everything he was carrying and wearing behind. He'll return to the place he left eventually, but it may be hours before he does so, or just seconds. The process is unpredictable. The heroine, though, is totally normal in her relationship with time and space.

That's a challenge of a premise, and I think it - and a number of things that fall out of it - are what most of those who dislike the book are bothered by. But for those of us who like fantasy or science fiction literature, it's not a problem. The willing suspension of disbelief came easily for me, particularly because the rest of the book is so wonderful.

What The Time Traveler's Wife is actually about is the relationship between Henry DeTamble and Clare Abshire. It's a well written love story, with interesting characters and real situations, set against background of uncontrolled time travel.

Of course all the classic issues presented by time travel are present too. Can you meet yourself and what happens if you do? Can you change the past or the future? Niffenbegger has answers for these questions and more in her world, but they come up naturally in the course of watching a couple meet, fall in love, and build a life together.

In this case Clare meets Henry for the first time when she's only 6, and he meets her for the first time when he's 28, but he's only 8 years older than she is. Understanding that, and all that goes with it, is a lot of fun.

Recommended.

A great first novel by an instructor at Columbia College in Chicago so her descriptions of the city and museums are right on. Loved this book, but it helped to have seen the movie first. It's an easy read with "chapters" written based on date and chapters subdivided by the person telling that part of the story, Clare or Henry. The book includes some sex scenes left out of the movie that don't add anything to the storyline. Expect some tears towards the end of the book!!

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was written very well and the story really kept my attention. I love that it switches back and forth between the perspectives of the two main characters. I thought the whole book was so well planned out. I love it when books hint to things that are coming later in the book so when it happens it all seems to fall into place. There are lots of things going on and I'm sure I missed many things my first read through but no worries since I will probably read this again someday. My only disclaimer in recommending this book is that there is some harsh language and sexual conent. I especially noticed that not only do they have a lot of sex and talk a lot about sex, but the manner in which they do so is a little crude. Aside from this, very interesting and entertaining! And I'm definitely not a science fiction kind of person, but this has just the right amount so that it's not really a science fiction kind of book. This is going in my favorites list!

I just finished reading this book and I'm almost at a loss for what to say about it. I loved it! It was captivating, an elegant story and style, and the depth of feeling, emotion and empathy that comes from reading this is amazing. I found myself sobbing into my husbands shirt as I read the ending, moved and touched as I haven't been in a long time. Even though the author tells us the ending before it comes, it takes nothing away from the moment when it actually comes full circle. Nothing I say here could possibly do justice to this novel ~ It has quickly become a favorite.

I loved the characters of Henry and Clare. They both have their strengths and flaws. The author gives them each a distinct voice and personality. So I felt like I really knew them. I could understand how they fell in love. How they complemented each other. How they frustrated each other. Their relationship seemed real and substantive to me, and I found myself fully invested in these characters.
It's a tragic story that weaves so much love/pain/joy/disappointment that it bursts with emotion. Read it!

The story is very engrossing and the relationship between Henry and Clare makes for a great romantic read but I found it a little hard to keep track of the story because it jumps all over the place in time. I had to go back to certain parts and re-read them to fully understand what was going on. I would still recommend the book though and hope to see the movie too.

I loved this book. I was expecting something along the lines of Nicholas Sparks, but this was very different. I felt like we were given what would be a pretty realistic view of how hard life would be if you could time travel, but couldn't control it. The hardships experienced by the narrator made the romance so much sweeter. This was a unique and well told story. It is not being reposted, because I lent it out to a neighbor, who couldn't put it down, and I think want to read it again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's one of my all-time favorites. What I like about it is that it's a melding of two genres that typically aren't done very well: romance and science-fiction. And yet both are done well here. The romance is not idealized, and the time travel mechanics are not allowed to distract from the story or the characters. Admittedly, it might not be for everyone. The time travel can get confusing, the characters aren't always likable, and there are some pretty graphically disturbing scenes. But if you can get past all that, this is a very enjoyable and touching story.

I LOVED this book. Took it out of circulation so I can read it again whenever I want.

Henry is one of the bravest characters I have had the pleasure of reading about. I have recommended this book to 2 different family members who have found it rather therapeutic. The theme of courageously dealing with unpredictable limitations in life, and the very precious quality of normal family life is quite poignant.

Real tears here, but worth it.

I think that The Time Traveler's Wife was an excellent book. It felt like the characters, Henry and Clare, were talking directly to me about their lives. They both felt extremely personable, and I loved the way that the story progressed through Niffenegger's choice of writing style. The foreshadowing was simple and yet extremely powerful and although having seen the movie before reading the book, I was not let down. The movie was close to the book's content, but the book gives so much more detail and character development than the movie did. It is a good, quick read.

I found The Time Traveler's Wife thoroughly engrossing. I had not viewed (or even previewed) the movie, and was lucky to just jump into the book with few preconceived notions. Telling the story from the alternating viewpoints of the two main characters as well as their respective time lines could have easily gotten disorienting to the reader. Instead, the way Ms. Niffenegger wove the story together keeps you in the moment instead of guessing plot points. She did everything she needed to for readers to understand where and when and to whom the events are happening as they unfold, even though they are not unwound in typical chronological fashion. The special circumstances encountered by the characters due to time travel make for several uncomfortable scenes that stimulate a lot of fascinating thought, and could easily generate discussions one wouldn't have had in the past. Although the premise is quite sci-fi, the story and characters and scenes are all absolutely realistic and engaging. Two warnings: Don't begin reading this book if you have other things to which you must attend, or you may neglect your duties to spend time finding out what Henry and Clare are doing; There is a liberal dose of obscene language, so be ready to skim if you find it offensive.

This is a truly unique story. I really enjoyed reading this book which is a love story about a man who travels through time - unexpectedly and involuntarily - and the woman he loves. At first it's a little difficult to follow, but once you go with the flow, things begin falling into place. If you're tired of the same old stories regurgitated with different names, you will enjoy this book as a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend the book.

This book is different but interesting. Henry travels through time but has no control as to where or when. One time he will be in the year of 2001 and maybe the next time of 1997. It is a love story when he meets a six year old girl and comes periodically to see her until she is of legal age and eventually they marry. Gosh what a marriage, she never knows when he might leave or return.

This is a romance novel of a different sort than I am accustomed to. Henry time travels and meets his current wife, Clare, when she is 6 years old and he is 34. The entire book is kinda like a his and her diary. There are incidents written from Clare's point of view and some from Henry's. It is very interesting but a really slow read with all the time traveling backwards and forewards and trying to keep track of where (and when) everyone is.

There really doesn't seem to be any point to the time travel. It appears that he just pops in and out of time to meet Clare at these different points in both their lives. I found this to be rather boring and had to force myself to finish reading it.

No lie, I only picked this book up and sped-read through it in order to watch the movie a few days later with a best friend.

The story is intriguing, presenting an interesting view of a time traveller, not only from his perspective but also from that of his family. Switching between perspectives and timelines, this story was a good read, but sort of dragged on longer than it needed.
During the first book, I literally did not want to stop reading. The story of Clare and Henry was grasping, being allowed glimpses of the future and past at the same time. Around the middle of book two, though, I was ready for the story to come to a close.

I would recommend this book, though, because it is a good story. Avoid the movie, though, it's just disappointing in comparison.
daylitmoon avatar reviewed The Time Traveler's Wife on
I just finished this book and it keeps running through my mind. At first I was hesitant when I read the beginning of the book and realized that it was from two different perspectives. But I ended up enjoying seeing the world through Henry and Clare. This book took a bit of effort, which I also enjoyed, because of the jumps in time. It was if they were starting off on separate ends of time and met in the middle. I liked the challenge of actually thinking about the book and how certain moments were possible, how Henry was able to be in one place while in another and how it effected the people in his life. The love of Henry and Clare is heart wrenching and yes, it is a tear-jerker and a little obscene in parts, but it all comes together. I haven't seen the movie but I can't imagine it moving me as much as the book has. I'm sure I'll end up reading it again. Now that I know the whole story, it will help me understand the little moments that were left in question.

Surprisingly, this is a romance. The hero, Henry DeTamble, and the heroine, Clare Abshire, love each other passionately. For both it's the love of their lives. Henry is a time traveler who encounters Claire at a very young age. As she grows up they get to know each other. They marry and after many miscarriages, they finally have a daughter, the much loved Alba, who is also a time traveler. I loved the ending. While many people really like this story I liked parts but thought it moved slowly in other parts. With the editors' help I think the tale could have been told about 300 pages.

This book was definitely a tearjerker - I probably cried from the second chapter to the very end, whereupon I used an entire box of tissues. So, if you need a good cry - this book is it.

I was, however, disappointed a bit that the characters didn't do anything more with the time traveling part. No real experiments to see if the future could be changed, both characters were so paranoid about not changing the future. Which I thought was rather silly. If I could time travel, I'd have done A LOT more with it than this guy did.

Finally, I couldn't really relate too much to the female character. For one thing, I'd run from such a relationship like the plague, true love or not (I'm too realistic, I suppose). For another, some scenes were pretty creepy in terms of her husband - especially one of the sex scenes. In general, aside from the whole time travel bit, he didn't seem like good partner material to me.

All in all, though, if I ignored the above, I did enjoy the book.

I saw this book on many lists over the years since it was printed, but I wasn't particularly interested in reading it. At first I mixed it up with The Mapmaker's Wife, a book I very much liked. When I realized my mistake I was still in no hurry to read it. But when it recently became available on paperbackswap I figured why not. I have so many credits there.

It's heavy. 536 pages. I don't mind heavy books, especially if I am absorbed in it. It can be a real pleasure to live within the pages of a book for more than a day or so. In this case that did not happen.

The story is told through the words of Henry DeTamble and Clare Abshire. Henry has an unusual condition: he travels through time. He has no control over when he will suddenly be ripped from one time to another, or when he will return. Nothing he wears or that is not a part of him travels with him, so he always lands at his destination in the nude.

And so it is that he is found by six-year-old Clare, in the woods near her home. She is young and therefore more willing to accept his story than adults would be. The two become friends over the years, as he pops in on her from different ages, randomly. The two become attached, but Henry is careful not to take advantage of her. Even so, he recognizes that she is at something of a disadvantage in this relationship.

Still, the two know they are meant for each other and they do eventually marry. Henry, who works as a librarian, continues to disappear and reappear and sometimes even meets himself at another age. His condition puts him at a disadvantage in several ways even as it provides the occasional advantage.

Henry and Clare, alternating, in short blurbs, describe what is happening, each section a different day and instance of time travel, except when they are both in the present. Thus we are swinging back and forth with them, which can be dizzying. I expect this method of presenting the story is meant to help us feel what it is like for the two of them.

It's an interesting premise and suggests many different scenarios. I felt many were included here, maybe more than necessary. I wanted the best for the pair yet never really grew to care that much about them. There were interesting moments, particularly when Henry had to engage in some criminal activity just to get some clothes on or some food in his stomach, and his sanguinity in the face of this is curious. Does he never worry about getting caught? Apparently not. For me, in any case, there was not enough to engage my interest through the whole drawn-out story, and toward the end I was impatient for it to be done.

I thought the promo was interesting. I did not like this book at all. I do not believe a really good story or really good subject needs grafic sex to sell or make it interesting.

This book was really hard for me to stay interested in. The whole time travel concept is confusing for awhile but eventually you tend to get the idea. But there really wasn't anything exciting about the book. Very different type of love story but i felt no emotion from the sotry... like as if the author was monotone through the whole book... if that makes sense. Not at all what I was expecting.

What a beautiful story. I have to admit, there was a point in this book where I was questioning everyone who said this was such a great book...it got a little slow and boring for a little bit. But as the characters grow older, get married and face their obstacles, it really got interesting. The author does a wonderful job creating the characters and you even get emotionally attached to them, especially Clare. I'm really glad I got this book and will probably read it again and again.

I absolutely loved this book. Even though I read nearly 5 years ago, it still remains in my mind. My daughter brought it on a family beach trip and once I picked it up we fought over who was going to read it. My daughter in law also read it this week and she gave it to her mom and sister to read. Needless to say we all loved it. While sometimes a love story, I laughed and cried numerous times through out the book. I only hope that the movie will be half as good as the book was. I look forward to rereading it as soon as I see the movie.

If you have not read this book, you should!

Forget the romance (which is remarkable, but not the only plus side) and look at a novel that examines the mind of a man who travels through time, often meeting himself in the journey. This book also examines the feelings of those around him dealing with his "disorder"

A FANTASTIC read!

I just started reading this book. At first it was a bit confusing as it goes back in forth in time but is rather amusing as the main character finds himself in some rather awkward situations through time travel and meets his wife at different stages in their lives.

Henry DeTamble is chronologically impaired, subject to involuntary and unpredictable jaunts in time, into his past, into his future, back to the present--all grounded by his love affair with Clare Abshire, a six year old, twentysomething, thirtyish...child/bohemian/artist/wife.... "Time Traveler..." is a most unusual story of love and fate--sad, funny, hopeful, puzzling, challenging, terrifying but most of all a lovely, lovely love story. Ranks in my top ten list of recent literary fiction.

This was a fast read for me - even though I had to flip back through pages to review items told out of sequence (which is part of this book's charm). I really liked this book though. The narration was each character telling parts of the story in their own thoughts/words as they went along, basically in the style of journal writing, which was interesting. Some people might say it was confusing and I wont lie, it was at times but I still read it quickly and at times had a very difficult time putting it down. I laughed and cried with the characters and felt like it moved along well. I am not sure how the movie will play out as I cannot see it being made into a movie with all the moving around and time changes but we will see. All in all, a good book that was entertaining and kept me thinking about it even after I finished it.

An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love.
The Time Traveler's Wife is a heart-wrenching account of a time traveler named Henry, who spontaneously "travels." He
cannot control when the time travel happens and it leads to a very unpredictable life. Henry meets Clare and thus begins
a love story of two people who can never be completely together. The Time Traveler's Wife will stay with you well after
you've read the ending. Melancholy follows the two lovers and propels you to keep reading. There is deep symolism in
the novel, though the circumstances around the two main characters is outlandish, the feelings behind it are real. How
can you truly be 100% with someone who can never be there for you? It's a question a lot of relationships face and
Niffenegger answers it beautifully.

I think what impressed me so much about this book was the way time traveling was handled.
It did take some getting use to, and if you keep trying and just read the story for itself. Once you do that you will find
your self engrossed.

The novel is also crafted on a very literary level, with eloquent sentences and descriptions that merit this being
a contemporary classic.

After being in my To Be Read pile for a while, I finally got around to this one, and I must say that I am glad I did. While I am not normally interested in "sci-fi" books, this one is soooooo much more than that. Even though the main premise of the book is the time travel (the main character is a time traveler due to a genetic defect), the underlying theme is one of undying love that spans across time. It was funny, sad, shocking, confusing, and wonderful. Don't let the confusion of the time travel with the character jumping back and forth throw you off... the story is worth a little confusion!

This was a fabulous book. The plot is original, the characters are real, and the writing "sucks" you in quickly. I found myself considering the story and its elements long after I'd put it down. Great Sci-Fi and a great love story. It's been a long time since I read a 500 page book in less than two weeks. It's a book I'll read more than once.
However, some "romance" scenes and extra use of the F-word will keep me from handing this one to my sixteen year-old.

I really enjoyed this story and I didn't realize it was an abridged version until after I had finished it. The only issue I had was that there was a lot of language (the f-word, the c--- word, yikes) which is easier to overlook on paper than coming out of my iPod! There were some really graphic sex scenes, but the only one that bothered me was NOT between the time traveler and his wife! If you liked the movie, you will probably enjoy the book. someone saw me reading this the other day, checked out the back cover and assumed it was some sappy romance novel. true, it is a story of love, but it is also so much more. niffenegger artfully addresses time travel, life and loss, hope and patience, while melding art and literature with the lives of her characters in such a way that i couldn't help but appreciate what she had done. it definitely puts life and love into a new perspective, one that is worth pondering over. the beauty of the story lies in the characters and the truth that we can find in them. unfortunately, as character building stories go, there were some lulls in the storyline. i had a hard time pushing through the first 200 pages, but flew through the next 200. the story itself was an interesting one, about henry detambles involuntary time travel to his own, and his wife clares, past and future. it is a difficult concept to grasp at first and requires a little sorting out of dates and people, but is a beautifully written account of such a complex subject.

i had a time travel dream last night, so i know that there was some level of impact on me. definitely a book i would recommend for you patient readers who love a rewarding experience through words.

The Time Traveler's wife is a beautiful story of the love between two people who are separated periodically by time travel. I loved the frequent point-of-view changes, but it got a little confusing at times and I had to backtrack to see what was going on. Otherwise this book is beautiful, and perfect. It's not a very good beach/lazy day read, though. I cried for a long, long time.

Henry and Clare's passionate affair endures across a sea of time and captures them in an impossibly romantic trap that tests the strength of fate and basks in the bounds of love. If you like time travel and romantic adventure (sans bodice-rippings), you will enjoy this read. Have Kleenex near at hand.

I did not care for this book. I read the reviews and it got great reviews by it's readers. Figured I would try it. I don't see why some people would say it's one of the best books they have read. For me it did nothing. I forced myself to finish it and give it a fair chance. Only part I enjoyed was the last couple chapters. I found the book to be slow. To be fair though I am into a different style of book.

This was a very interesting take on time travel and the strengths of the bonds of love. I personally had a difficult following it because of constantly going back & forth from the present to the past and the future but I am aware of the fact that most people love it. It is in double 1st person. Harry talks in 1st person and Claire talks in 1st person.

I enjoyed the book, yes it was a bit confusing time wise and I started to go back to check when the last entry was made but after awhile I just gave up and read it not really concerned when the events were happening. I was immediately drawn to the way she writes and couldn't put the book down. Debated re swapping as I really liked it but figured I should let others enjoy it as much as I did. I was hooked from the beginning, I enjoy time travel stories and am not at all into romance books.

Not being a fan of science fiction, I was not sure if I would make it through this story. Much to my surprise, I loved the book. The beginning of the story was a bit rough with the constant shifts of time, and I was too focused on trying to keep track of the exact dates and ages of the characters to be sure the author was not playing tricks on the reader. Through all of that however, Audrey Niffenegger quickly builds depth to the characters, offers a non-sci-fi explanation for the time travel, and builds an unconventional, beautiful love story. The plot contains many clues to foreshadow the things to come, which are offered from the perspectives of both the time traveler and his wife. Audrey Niffenegger builds a nice intensity to the story, and a longing for more time for its characters.

Someone take this book off my hands. It was on my wish list for a long time and I couldn't wait to start reading it. Within thirty pages, I was cringing at how horrible the dialogue was. Somewhere along, I thought, it must get better, because I'd heard good things.... Um, no. It did not get better. The story idea was clever, but the characters were so corny and contrived that it was downright embarrassing. The movie must be better than the book. I wish I'd spared myself and just watched that.

This is a book that will wrap itself around your heart once you are established in the rhythm of "time travel." I originally rejected it because of the sci-fi angle (my least favorite genre), but realized once I had begun reading it, that the time travel is a necessary adjunct to the love story of two exceptional people. The intensity and depth of their emotions for each othre would not, I believe, have been there without the concept. Ms. Niffenegger is a consummate write who succeeds in combiningtwo or three disparate themes in one truly outstanding novel.

These 500 pages seemed like 1,000. Are editors no longer employed by the publishing companies? She's one of several authors in recent months who seem to go to press without one word being deleted from their manuscripts. I would have red-penciled at least half her pages.

Henry DeTamble, a mild-mannered librarian, suffers from a 'genetic
disorder' that causes him to travel in time unexpectedly. Many of his
time-traveling experiences are linked to Clare - a woman that he meets
at various times and places in her life, and falls in love with.
Primarily a love story, the book focuses on the difficulties caused in
Henry and Clare's relationship by his frequent disappearances, and the
dangers faced by Henry (inherent in showing up at a random location,
vulnerable, disoriented and naked). There is also the awkwardness
caused by the fact that Henry often meets Clare when she is a child
and he is an adult. The disjunction of the two meeting at different
points in time, from different perspectives on life and their
relationship is handled very well.
I liked how the time-travelling was placed in context of a new
ailment, shared by others, and a focus of research, but I wish that
more page time had been given to such a disorder's larger impact on
society. The book almost gives a sense of tunnel vision - Clare is so
solely focused on Henry that the world recedes. this makes sense
especially considering (SPOILERS) that after Henry's death, she spends
the entire rest of her life waiting for him, with the knowledge that
she will see him for one last moment. The book tries to position this
as a romantic and beautiful thing, but I couldn't see it as anything
else but a tragic waste of life.

A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant.

This is quite possibly one of the worse books I have ever read. I don't know how they are going to make it into a movie and actually keep audiences interested.

The author never changes writing styles even when switching between characters which gets very annoying and makes it hard to read. There is basically no character development beyond simple emotions and no real connections to other characters except the main two.

In my opinion you're best to find a different book, don't waste a credit waiting in line for this one.

Curious to see how the movie turns out. Hard to understand how she deals with such a difficult relationship starting off at such a young age. Real love story and true acceptance.

Strange book, but I thought the premise was interesting so I tried it. Not too hard to follow if you keep on reading, but if you were to put it down for a week or so & return to it you'd probably be lost. It kept my interest enough that I finished it, but it was just ok for me, not anything spectacular.

Unnecessary suffering. Horrible ending. some creepiness with the relationship initially when she's 12 and he's 35. Had to force myself to finish it. Very overrated.

WAIT UNTIL READER'S DIGEST CONDENSES IT
These 500 pages seemed like 1,000. Are editors no longer employed by the publishing companies? She's one of several authors in recent months who seem to go to press without one word being deleted from their manuscripts. I would have red-penciled at least half her pages.
Interesting premise, but entirely too unruly and disjointed for even the most patient of readers.

Although the time traveler, Henry, is portrayed as an unorthodox librarian who loves and lives a Punk Rock lifestyle, his non-linear love affair with the woman who he eventually marries would have been totally orthodox, save the oddball time travel twist. I understand it's probably meant as a metaphor for the inconsistent ways, both physically and not, we are there (or not) for the ones we love, but for me it read like standard sappy Chick Lit (emphasis on Chick, less on Lit) parading as something more highbrow.

This is the story of a man trying to lead a normal life, while bouncing around his past and future in the style of Quantum Leap.

This edition is a full-size hardcover book with a price (U.S. $25.00) on the dust jacket. It also has the Today's Book Club logo printed on it, looking like a sticker.

I haven't read this one. I've been waffling on reading it or not for awhile. I got it from Amazon with a gift certificate & lent it to my sister-in-law who told me she was captivated by it, read it all, cried buckets and hated it. I don't think I'm ready for the emotional commitment this book requires so I'll post it for someone else to enjoy!

Jesus is a cuss word in this book. And it went from there. A good vocabulary doesn't need the kind of expression used in this book.

I hated this book. The concept is interesting, but I was very offended by the main character's stance on adoption. I can't believe Niffenegger would give her main character such a backwards view on one way of forming a family.
