It is hard to believe I've read 21 books in the Roger the Chapman series by Kate Sedley. Sadly, there is only one more left, as the author ended this series in 2013. But I can't complain, as she was 87 when she stopped writing, and, as of today, she is still alive at 96.

When you read enough mystery novels you learn to look for text which doesn't seem to have anything to do with moving the plot forward, but is just filler. Especially if a reference to that text is repeated. Because then you're sure that somehow that text will either be used to reveal the killer or a motive. And so it was with this novel when Roger got really annoyed with his children and displayed his anger in a way you wouldn't have expected him to. To make sure we wouldn't overlook it, Ms. Sedley brings the incident up a few times later in the book. I leave it to you to figure it out. Although I've missed this plot device in many books, in this one I picked up on it right away.

I wasn't all that happy with the way the book ended, but Ms. Sedley needed that to happen so as to support what happened in history to one King of England.
