These ancient symbolic cards extend the scope of ordinary language and reveal something of the life below the surface of any individuals consciousness and feelings. Nietzsche asked whether language was an adequate expression of all realities; and in some respects the tarot is an attempt to unlock deeper human responses to, and experiences of, the world. They are capable of articulating emotions and passions that are difficult to express overtly, and of which we are sometimes not even aware. The history of the tarot is complex: some sources maintain that the word itself is a compound of ta and ro, which are Egyptian for the Royal Path. Readings were once only given for those in power a tradition still in Elizabethan England, when the great Queen had her own astrologer and esoteric advisor, Dr John Dee. The fate of a nation was vested, after all, in the ruler, and this justified the elite nature of reading for royalty hence the path of the royal. We do know that the cards were used in mediaeval times in the royal courts of Europe, individual decks being designed to specific commission. Certainly, the images familiar to most of us often feature mediaeval knights, ladies and lords, entwining jousts and feasts along with gothic architecture in their rich symbolism. It is even said that the 22 major arcana once decked the walls of the Great Pyramid. According to this view it was the gypsies, thought to be descended from the Egyptians (and hence their name) who brought the cards with them to Europe and became their brilliant interpreters. Titanias aim in writing this new volume is to unite the immense flexibility of the cards in their traditional meanings with their equally significant astrological past, harnessing the knowledge many of us now have of astrology and the meanings of the signs of the zodiac. This approach to the tarot emphasises and celebrates the Court Cards (kings, queens and jacks) and gives them an association with each star sign, so that you can more easily identify who is being described within the cards.« less
