The Secret of Vigor, — Tono-Bungay It was simple and yet in some way arresting. I found myself repeating the word after I had passed; it roused one's attention like the sound of distant guns. "Tono" -- what's that? and deep, rich, unhurrying; -- "Bun -- gay!" Then came my uncle's amazing telegram, his answer to my hostile note...  more »

Personally, I thought it was weird. But, some would like it just because it's H.G. Wells

I started reading this book because it was written by H.G. Wells. Little did I realize it was a book about the ups and downs of life.

The narrator is George Ponderevo, a man who is remembering his life from childhood to where he is today. Through it all, he has survived - from the death of his mother, being taken in by his Uncle and Aunt, going into business with his uncle, a divorce, rediscovering his childhood companions, and starting over.

I wouldn't say this is a good book. It is interesting and unusual. Taking place in the early 1900s England, it does say a lot of life during this time period. It did take me awhile to read it, and the drawings that are littered throughout didn't really assist in drawing me into the story. However, if your interested in English Society and the other types of stories Mr. Wells wrote after his earlier, famous works, this might be a good one to start with.
