Cyril Hare, in this classic English detective story, combines a cleverly planned murder with a brilliant description of the adventures and misadventures of a judge of the High Court on Assize and his entourage.

"even if it were not a very ingenious murder story (which it is) with a culprit whose identification will defeat most readers until the last pages, Tragedy at Law would still be a memorable piece of writing and a novel to be saluted with respect.

P. D. James listed this book as her favorite "whodunit" in the Wall Street Journal.
