The story of this book was good, but somewhat forgettable. I really enjoyed all the characters. I thought the main character was strong, yet gentle.

I picked this book off of my TBR to read because I needed an epistolary book for a challenge. This book consists of writings by the main character. Some are letters to various friends and relatives, and some are diary entries (which she writes in the form of a letter: Dear Diary, etc.)  The book covers a year where this young woman goes to a rural Texas town to be the schoolteacher. She learns a lot about herself and others. The story seemed very realistic, with an idealistic young woman pushing against racism and pushing for women's rights. I thought that the author captured the flavor of the time very well. I look forward to reading book 2 in this series.
