A quick and entertaining read. This is my first V.I. Warshawski novel, but I will definitely read more. The characters are well developed and are complex in nature. V.I. Warshawski is a "train wreck" of a private detective: financially-strapped, working out of a mostly abandoned Chicago building which is scheduled to be demolished soon, struggling to balance her personal and professional lives, full of fire and passion for justice to the point of putting her life and the lives of friends in danger. This is an exciting book.

The eighth book in the V.I. Warshawski P.I. series set in Chicago. It's been many years since I read the book in the series previous to this one, so it took me awhile to re-acquaint myself with Vic and all the particulars of her life, her friends and family, etc. I don't think I remembered her being so argumentative and nosy and generally bitchy before, but she sure was in this book, and it did grow old rather quickly. Vic begins an investigation as to why an all-female construction company had the plug pulled on their contract. She's doing the job pro bono at the request of one of her friends, who then suddenly calls her off, saying they've made a deal with a local non-profit to do some rehabbing of homes for low-income families. But Vic's already uncovered some things that make her uneasy, which of course means she's like a dog with a bone and won't let go. Since she was doing the work free anyway, she continues nosing around. When one of the women serving on the board of the non-profit is found dead in Vic's office with her head bashed in, then it gets personal. I give this book a B-, and will read the next in series but I really hope V.I.'s prickliness wears off a bit.

I love V. I. Warshawski! She is one tough woman who isn't afraid of anything! This is a sit-on-the-edge of your seat book all the way. But, it's about spouse and child abuse, so beware if these are triggers for you...
