This new edition retains thorough syllabication and phonetic transcriptions and, at the same time, broadens the base of the dictionary and therefore its usefulness. Canfield has incorporated hundreds of current terms from such basic vocabularies as those of office workers, welders, machinists, builders, and automotive mechanics as well as important entries relating to computer science, telecommunications, food preparation and serving, and the environment. Indications of regional occurrence have been considerably refined, and Canfield's extensive discussion of regional dialects is complemented with maps denoting the location of distinctive features.« less
