Great, funny account of the effort by two Russian artists to teach domesticated Thai elephants to paint in an effort to raise funds for their care and upkeep. The story of Thailand's elephants is very sad, with only 1500 wild ones in the diminishing forest. The thousands of domestic elephants with their handlers often have to resort to illegal logging or cheap tricks (often with cruel training and grueling hours) for tourists.
Komar & Melamid are famous Russian artists, who often delve into the absurd or the anti-establishment. This is the story in pictures and humorous text of how they taught elephants to paint, with surprising results. The paintings have been an international sensation, and have raised thousands for elephant conservation in Thailand.
