A sweet but somewhat preachy story about doing the right thing even when it goes against the establishment for which you work. The book raises interesting questions about how society defines quality parenting but quickly glosses over main points of the story. For example, we learn that there is lots of public support for the main character (suspended police officer working to protect a child) but we don't know much about how it came about. It sort of felt like you were hearing the story third hand rather than "in" it.
This was a fairly exciting book which unfolds as the main character, Rose, faces a decision during a fire in her daughter's elementary school cafeteria about who to save first--her daughter across the hall in a restroom or her daughter's bullying classmates who are nearby. Even though the mom makes a good decision, the parents in this school are in an uproar, feed on misinformation, and shun her.
A excellent book concerning families. As the author writes, "very much a story about the frailites and strengths of people,and what happens when they all bump into each other. the portrayal of the Iraq vet,suffering from PTSD, and caring for his daughter and his daughter caring for him was moving.
