Loved the Wife Lottery Series by Jodi Thomas. Love her humor and insight. These books are what I consider easy reading and great to take on a trip. I love Jodi Thomas, either contemporary or old west novels.

Sarah is one of 3 women tossed from a wagon train heading west. Sarah has lost her baby and her husband to illness and Sarah isnt felling too great either!

Not long after leaving the wagon train, they are approached by a man who decides to steal their oxen, wagon and one of the 3 women. They take turns beating the man with a board/log -- then realize they have killed him.

As soon as they get to a town, they surrender to the sheriff. They feel they acted in self-defense; the lawman sees things differently. Because they are costing the town lots of money (food, guard expenses, etc.), the sheriff thinks of an ingenious plan.

The women have no money and no means of support; however the area has a serious imbalance between marriageable ladies and men. He decides to let the ladies draw a mans name and let him pay her fine. Thus, the man gets a wife and the woman gets a home and the town gets out of debt.

We meet Sarah and Sam after he has paid her fine and married her. She doesnt know she has married a bounty hunter who has lots of enemies. By chapter 2, hes been stabbed and is near death.

Sarah, who has been treated as a fragile waif not long for this world, suddenly has to care for (and hide) a heavy man she hardly knows her husband. I laughed hard while reading Sarah's complaints to her comatose husband about her fragile hold on life!

Yes, the story has holes and the ending could have been better, but it is a great story! I enjoyed the whole series.

Second in a series about three young women alone in the 1880s in Texas

In 1880, three young women are expelled from a wagon train in the middle of wild-and women-starved-Texas: young widow Sarah Andrews, volunteer nurse Lacy Dillavou and spunky Bailee Moore. All three become murder suspects when a no-goodnik attempts to steal both their wagon and Lacy, but in the absence of a dead body, a pragmatic sheriff raffles them off to marriage-minded locals-hence Thomas's Wife Lottery Series. This book, which is second in the series after The Texan's Wager, follows the relationship between Sarah and legendary bounty hunter Sam Gatlin as they evade criminals, sleep under the stars and sort out their feelings for each other. While Sam keeps them safe, Sarah tries to come to terms with her tumultuous past and the realization that she may be in love with her new husband.

From Amazon.com:

Sarah Andrews, first introduced in The Texan's Wager (2002), is cast off the wagon train as an "undesirable" with her friends Bailee and Lacey and then conned by the local sheriff into being part of a wedding lottery in order to stay out of prison. The man who "wins" Sarah, Sam Gatlin, is a universally hated bounty hunter, feared by everyone he meets except Sarah. Sam has terrible luck as a new groom. He gets shot, stabbed, and otherwise hunted down for his role in putting bad guys behind bars. To top everything off, Sarah has made him promise not to consummate their union until she's ready. Undaunted by Sam's reputation and gruff mannerisms, Sarah sticks by him during the attempts on his life, even acting as his protector when the situation warrants. Beauty and the Beast meet the Old West as the feisty Sarah refuses to fear the man whose reputation makes sane men tremble. Thomas' second Texas title is even better than the first, which is terrific

Loved this book which is the second book of a series. The characters are wonderfully developed. The story captured my interest immediately and I just wanted to do nothing but read until I was finished. Each book in the series stands alone but if possible read all 4 books as characters from each book are common throughout.

2nd in the Wife Lottery series. I loved Sarah's story! I read it in 2 days, I work full time, and have a 10year old and husband, I have no idea where I found the time, but it was good! Can't wait for Lacy's story...

3 stars. Second in a series (The Texan's Wager; When a Texan Gambles; Texan's Luck). The main characters meet when he bails her out of jail in a wife lottery and marries her. The plot centers on their adventures avoiding and then going after an outlaw looking to do away with him. The story and the characters are great. There are no ugly surprises, and the love story is sweet; but the writing leaves a lot to be desired.

My word, this is the best in the series. The entire series should be read, in order, if you are a Jodi Thomas fan. There are 4 books in the series, read them all. quick and in order. They are all real love stories, what romance novels should be. They are great. They are clean, And they are entertaining.
