Hello!  I have had several ideas over the years for books, but I don't particularly like writing.  Now I have an idea that I really want to run with.  It involves interviewing and research and I can handle that, but I have no clue what I am doing when it comes to publishing.  Where do I start with publishing?  Do I take a chance and write it hoping there is interest or do I contact a publisher to check for interest and guidance along the way?  What other tips might you have for me?

Craig's list has a great forum for writers.  This question comes up a lot.  Some of these contributors have been published, so their ideas are solid.  Check it out.

Do your research and write before you worry about publishing.  A man once told me he wants to write, but he can't FIND the time, I told him to make the time.  The same thing goes for you.  Write and worry about everything else later, when it's time.

I have submitted things to CL from time to time.  You will get a variety of responses, ranging from helpful to downright nasty.  It is good preparation for dealing with criticism - which is one of my worse things.  As far as Penny's suggestion, she is right on.  Write for the fun of it - you will love it - if it is publishable things will happen.  jc

Attending a writer's conference is the best way to learn the craft of writing and learn about editing, publishing and submitting manuscripts, and a chance to meet writers and publishers. I have been attending the Write to Publish Conference ( a faith-based conference ) which is excellent and I have learned so much. They have a conference June 4-7 in Wheaton, IL in the Billy Graham Center near Chicago. You can attend 1 day or all 4 - lots of workshops, and opportunity to have 15 minute face to face meeting with editors, publishers and authors.  www.writetopublish.com

There are also summer writing workshops and college classes for adults. Lots of ways to learn about writing and publishing and improve your craft. Call your local library or check adult college classes or watch local newspapers.

Don't worry about the publishing until you're done with the manuscript.
