Winding Up the Serpent
Author: Priscilla Masters
When Sister Marilyn Smith fails to turn up for work, her patients are worried. Evelyn Shiers, her nosy neighbour, is anxious too. Later that afternoon, the police find her dead in the bedroom lying spread-eagled across the bed. She is provocatively dressed and elaborately made-up.

This first Joanna Piercy mystery by Priscilla Masers was hard to find; finally took the large print edition because I wanted to start the series from the beginning.

It is a first novel, all right; it's kind of lightweight, and the premises on which Joanna pursues the case and is convinced she can prove it's a murder are kind of thin, to say the least.

She sets up a problematic relationship with a married pathologist who doesn't seem to have very strong ethical values, and I am hoping she doesn't keep him going as a love interest for Joanna in future novels.

Her later novels have had raves in England. Why am I interested in these mysteries? My maiden name is Piercy, and I think it will be fun to share these with my sisters.
