Frostmourne. It was caught in a hovering, jagged chunk of ice, the runes that ran the length of its blade glowing a cool blue. Below it was a dais of some sort, standing on a large gently raised mound that was covered in a dusting of snow. A soft light, coming from somewhere high above where the cavern was open to daylight, shone down on the rune...  more »

As an avid player of World of Warcraft, wandering its cities under the banner of the Alliance, questing through the fictional Plaguelands, and intrigued by the lore of Arthas the Lich King, I found this book absolutely fascinating!

Arthas: Rise of the Lich King is a fantastic fantasy read. Reading about characters I'm familiar with in the game - their intriguing histories, their characters fascinating - only deepens the richness of the lore. And Arthas! You'll love him and you'll hate him. You wouldn't think it could happen, but it does.

If you're interested in the lore of Arthas - a charming Prince, a worthy Paladin, and an all too human male with bungling emotions who fatefully becomes the Lich King, this book does not disappoint! It's an exciting read that would especially delight Warcraft players - more likely with the female readers since there is a thread of romance with Jaina Proudmoore that is weaved throughout the novel.

The book also offers insight on the death of King Llane of Stormwind, the orcs, the fall of Sylvanas Windrunner, the rise of the Forsaken, the initial invasion of the scourge plague, the terrible day of the culling of Stratholme, the fall of Sunwell, and more. It neatly pulls together much the the rich lore of of the world that we know of as Azeroth in the popular role-playing game of World of Worldcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

This book has everything, a coming of age story, love, loss, a tear-jerking horse story, politics, zombies, revenge, betrayal, and a lot more.
I picked this up because I play World of Warcraft and I am really loving learning more about the lore surrounding the universe of the game. This book did NOT disappoint; it is truly fascinating and informative and has left me hungry for more.
I rated this five stars because I know this book will be very memorable as I play the game; it is nice to have a back story for some of the characters I have met in the game.

I enjoyed the first half of the book the most because it was very emotional and engaging. Arthas was fairly easy to relate to and it was so interesting to learn about his childhood and young adulthood. The second half, while extremely fascinating, was less engaging. The book takes on a strange dynamic where the main character (whom you have likely been rooting for) turns into a villain who is very distant and cold. The two halves of the book are different because its almost like you kind of step back after he picks up Frostmourne and watch his chaotic spiral into darkness, as he pulls a lot of people down with him. It was, truthfully, sort of depressing. But I have done the Ice Crown Citadel raid, so I know how his story turns out. ;-)
The more I read, the more I understand that villains are very complex. Things are not black and white, and this is what literature is all about.

Great book! I think that the people who will enjoy this the most are WoW players, but I think others can enjoy it as well.
